A Mavis Biesanz about Cynthia Salisbury
From Mavis Biesanz' unpublished "Family History - Biesanz - Berry - Hiltunen/Biesanz wedding" 1982
Philip Biesanz married Cynthia Salisbury, who was born in Reo, Wisconsin, in 1848.(1) Her father, Sam Salisbury, was born in England (2) and married Cathrin (2) Barrett of Eire; they emigrated to the United States, and both died in High Forest, Minnesota.
Dad (John Biesanz) says that Grandmother Cynthia added the "e" to Bisanz because people persisted in saying "Buy-sance.(3)" In the Winona area the name is still pronouned BEE-sance; it was Aunt Betty(Beatrice Biesanz Conrad) while studying French at the University of Wisconsin, who began to pronounce it "Bih-SAHNZ."(4)
Philip and Cynthia had six children: Elizabeth, Charles Philip, born Dec. 22, 1873, Frank, William, Leona, and Florence. We visited Uncle William on our Western trip; he lived on the banks of the Columbia River and had cemented his yard and painted it green because he was good and tired of mowing a lawn. Uncle Frank and Aunt Leona never married. Uncle Frank lived to a great age, always poking fun at marriage and reciting the same toast at weddings:
O the gladness of her gladness when she's glad!
And the sadness of her sadness when she's sad!
But the gladness of her gladness
And the sadness of her sadness
Isn't in it with the madness of her madness when she's mad!
Notes:
1) There is a "Rio, Wisconsin" near Wyocena where the family had their second farm. The photograph of Cynthia Salisbury I have from Mavis Biesanz says on the back "born March 13, 1848, Beaver Dam, Wisconsin d. 1930 Winona MN?" Beaver Dam, WI is where they had their first farm. - ssb
2) The federal census for 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880 give Samuel's place of birth as New York, his wife's first name as "Catherine' and her birthplace as Ireland. Also, on the 1880 census both Samuel's parents are listed as born in New York and both Catherine's parent's are listed as born in Ireland. I think the 1875 census is incorrect; it shows Catherine as born in N.J. and her parents as VT; Samuel as born in N.G., and both his parents from Maine. Probably Samuel Salisbury and his parents were born in New York, not England as Maude Biesanz told Mavis. -ssb
3) The 1850 Eire, PA census spells the name "Bisantz." The 1860 Dubuque census spells the name "Bisang"; in 1870 "Biesanz"; in 1880 "Bisanz." Philip Biesanz appears on the Civil War soldier list as "Bisany" It's possible that Cynthia Salisbury made the change, but the name was never very fixed beforehand. -ssb
4) Beatrice "Betty" Biesanz Conrad also grew up speaking French to her Quebecois grandmother, Orilla Richmond Salisbury. - ssb
