Judith Jefferson

( - )

There is something very strange, or very wrong about this Judith Jefferson in much of the online data. Hopkins research and the history of Pittsylvania Co book, both say Judith was the daughter of Peter Field Jefferson, a first cousin of President Thomas Jefferson. I believe instead she was a sister to Peter Field, daughter of Field Jefferson.

Pittsylvania County Virginia Heritage: 1767-2004 has additional information about Judith, daughter of Peter Field Jefferson.
Here are some dates given in the book. Peter Field, son of Field Jefferson & Mary Frances Robertson was born 14 Mar 1734 - one version says Henrico Co, the other gives Mecklenberg - which wasn't formed until 1765 and then from Lunenburg Co. The Henrico Co location seems much more likely. Peter Field married Elizabeth Allen 29 May 1762. They did have a child Judith who is said to have been born 7 Jan 1774. This doesn't agree with the Hopkins material that says Capt Arthur Hopkins married her about 1765. The Pittsylvania Heritage book goes on to state that Judith never married and was the executor of her mother's will as recorded in Pittsylvania WB 1, p.149 - Elizabeth Allen Jefferson died 7 May 1828. I believe the truth is that the Judith Jefferson who married Capt Arthur Hopkins was instead the sister of PeterField, not his daughter. PeterField's sister would have been of the same approximate generation of Arthur Hopkins Jr. and this would also make Judith a first cousin of President Thomas Jefferson. PeterField and his sister Judith were the children of FIELD Jefferson, hence perhaps the source of confusion.
