James Hopkins

James took part at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse NC when he was age 15. He had enlisted from Pittsylvania Co. He was pensioned 17 Sep 1832. He had substituted for James Hopkins Sr in the Spring of 1780.

James Hopkins served as Justice of the Peace in Pittsylvania 1820 and again in 1832.

Pittsylvania DB 12, p.361 1 Dec 1801. James and Samuel Hopkins to Joseph Terry, land purchased by Arthur Hopkins from George Jefferson except for 1/8 of an acre, the graveyard wherein was deposited the bodies of Arthur Hopkins and Judith his wife, parents of aforesaid James & Samuel, the deceased wife of James Hopkins and two of his infant children. Deed signed by James, Mary, Samuel & Elizabeth Hopkins.

James' first wife was Frances Carter, daughter of Jesse and Mary (Chattin) Carter. They married 23 Oct 1793. He married 2nd, Mary Carter, her sister, on 15 Nov 1797 at the home of her uncle, Thomas Carter. The will of Jesse Carter [WB 11, p.367] dated 30 Nov 1805, bequeaths property to gr.son Arthur Hopkins, son of James Hopkins and to gr.son Robert Carter Hopkins, son of my dau. Mary Hopkins. Mary Carter Hopkins died about 1853. On 2 May 1853, she applied for widow's pension and stated that she was 92 years of age. Her property was divided among her children by deed dated 14 Nov 1853, DB 55, p.21.
