Solomon Spears

(Abt 1765 - 28 May 1788)

Solomon's birth year is found anywhere from 1748 until 1757, but he is said to have 21 when he died which would actually be about 1767. Since he appears on tax lists by 1786 and was likely age at least 21, that places his birth as before 1765.

Solomon was killed by Indians on Salt River in KY, May 1788 - The Battle of the Kettles There are said to have 13 people in the party that had come to make salt; most were killed. Solomon was unmarried and childless so his siblings were his heirs - it was 1825 before the estate was settled and some of his siblings had died, making nieces and nephews his heirs.

As told in Collins History of Kentucky, a flat bottomed boat, loaded with kettles intended to be used in the manufacture of salt at Bullitt's Lick left Louisville with 14 persons, 12 armed men, a woman and a Negro boy, on board. The boat was owned by Henry Crist, Christian Crepps and Solomon Spears. A sound of gobbling of turkeys lured them ashore. Soon they were attacked by over one hundred Indians. Creeps and Spears were killed. Crist and several other escaped, while the woman was made a captive.
