Jane Patillo was first married to Robert Lanier. The Laniers were neighbors of Francis Poindexter's father. Apparently Robert Lanier died with debts. See later:

John Sence West, Marshall for Dist of NC sold to Joseph Williams, Esq, of Surry Co NC as highest bidder, for $6 per each 100 acres, the lands of Robert Lanier. There was an execution from the Circuit Court for the sum of $6,335.90 in favor of Archebald and John Hamilton against the following: Thomas Lanier, Elizabeth H. Lanier, Francis Poindexter & Jane his wife.
[Jane married Francis Poindexter in 1786 - Thomas and Elizabeth are likely her children by Robert Lanier. They would be the heirs of Robert Lanier.]
There were 5 parcels of land described in the deed from the Entries of Surry Co. All marked in the margin of the Entry Book as granted.
#874 500 acres both sides Douglas's Branch, waters of Little Yadkin including vacant lands bounded by Gideon Wright, Frederick Miller, Robert Walker & Martin Armstrong. Entered 6 Nov 1778

[At the price of $6 per 100 acres, the amount paid for this 1690 acres did not come anywhere near covering the debt. The total paid was $101.40. Looks like the County Court Clerk got himself a bargain!]

There is no copy of a will, yet there must have been one since there were Executors, not administrators of the estate.

Inventory of the Estate taken April 1785, signed by Jane Lanier & Jo. Williams, Executrix and Executor.
Slaves listed in the inventory: Jacob, alias Richard Cain, Young Jacob, Cary, Sam, Jack, Titus, Riner, Charlotte, Such & Peter, Dick in possession of Giles Hudspeth which Negro is in dispute. Also Arthur, Davey, Sipes, Pompey, Janny, Cloe & Stepney which were taken by the British Tories and not yet recovered. img.73
26 May 1798 Subpeona issued for Joseph Williams & Francis Poindexter, Executors of the estate. Francis obviously acting for his wife - he signed many of the receipts.
By February of 1804, Joseph Williams and Jane Poindexter were executors and still dealing with lawsuits and debts. Francis Poindexter now deceased as well.

21:831 Senate journal, 3 Dec 1790: Received from the House of Commons a memorial of Jane Pindexter, executrix, and Joseph Williams, executor of Robert Lanier.
21:862 Senate journal, Wed. 15 Dec 1790. The committee to whom the memorial of Jane Pindexter & Joseph Williams, was referred, beg leave to report. That from the information of the Comptroller, it appears that it is impossible to raise and support any charge in behalf of the public against the estate of the late Robert Lanier, Treasurer of the Salisbury district, for the utmost industry has been ineffectually used to collect from the Clerks of the different counties of said district their assessments, during the period in which Mr. Lanier acted.
21:865 Senate journal, 15 Dec 1790. Received from the House of Commons the report of the committee on the petition of the executors of Robert Lanier, dec'd. endorsed "Concurred with".

Jane Poindexter. 2m under age 10. 1f over age 45.
She would appear to have grandchildren living with her. Her three grown sons appear on the same page in the census which appears to be the District of Capt. T. Poindexter.


Jane Patillo Lanier Poindexter is buried at the Clingman Cemetery, Shallow Ford Crossing, Yadkin Co [now Forsyth] NC.
