Individual Details

Rev. Henry Littleton Pattilo

(1726 - 24 Aug 1801)

Henry was placed with a merchant to learn the art of trade, but turned instead to teaching and then the ministry. He kept a journal beginning 10 Aug 1754 which apparently outlines the major events of his life [I wonder where this journal is today - Frances H. Casstevens wrote the article about Henry Pattillo which appears in The Heritage of Yadkin County.] His first sermon apparently preached in April in 1756 in Hanover Co. He was granted license to preach in Charlotte County, at the Presbytery at Cub Creek that September. In 1758 he accepted calls from congregations at Willis, Byrd, & Buck Island. In 1765 he was in Caswell Co, NC, then Orange Co, at the Presbytery at Hyco and was invited across the Dan River to supply the central North Carolina churches. Henry Patillo preached against the Regulators Movement, but he was elected delegate to the NC Provincial Convention from Bertie Co, Aug 1775. He was chosen Chairman of the Convention. In 1780, Henry went to Granville Co NC to serve Grassy Creek and other congregations. He received an honorary degree from Hampden-Sydney College in 1787. In August of 1801, he was invited to preach in Dinwiddie County and died while there.
