Individual Details

ANN "NANCY" JOHNSON

(21 Nov 1757 - Bet 1798 and 1806)

Both the birth of Ann Johnson and her marriage to William Haden is recorded in the Douglas Register of St. James Northam Parish: "both of Albemarle". Her birth record in 1757, as the daughter of Joseph Johnson and Sarah Harris is the proof of their marriage - this date is sometimes erronously seen as their marriage date.

Ann Johnson's death date is not known. The youngest child of Ann & William Haden, also named Nancy or Ann, was born about 1798 according to the 1850 census. William did not remarry until December of 1807. As men with small children usually remarried rather soon after the death of a wife, one would think Ann lived perhaps until 1805. However, William did have slaves who could have cared for his children. I have found no deeds in Logan Co that had her release of dower, nor any other record of her name. It is presumed she was the mother of the children as listed. There is a possibility that William Haden had a brief earlier marriage and the eldest daughter might have been from that marriage.
