[Donna Donahue had his name as John Montgomery Porter; his son as John Wilson Porter. Mr. Taylor had them as John W. and John Montgomery as the son. Other reserach omits the middle name entirely.]

John Porter deposed on 8 Oct 1832 in Butler Co Court. He stated his age as 73. He served in the 5th Regiment of the Virginia Line in 1776. He entered service 7 Feb 1776 under Commander Col. Sharles Scott and Col. Josiah Parkes. He served two years in Morgan's Rifles. He resided in Prince Edward Co VA when he entered the Service. In March of 1778, he volunteered and marched to Charleston. About July of 1778 he enlisted for another 18 months. He served as orderly & 1st Sgt. He was discharged Jan 1782. He was in the battle at Guilford Courthouse and at Camden; he was at the High Hills at the Santee and at the battle of Eutaw. He signed his own name.
Thomas Carson, Morgantown, Butler Co made deposition on 9 Jul 1832. He was 72 years old. He served in the VA Continental Line in Feb 1776, for two years in the 5th Regt. He served with John Porter; they enlisted the same day. He also served with him when he enlisted for the second time as a sergeant. Carson was asked if he was certain this was the same John Porter and he replied that they were raised near each other in Virginia and had lived in the same neighborhood in Kentucky for thirty years. Thomas Carson was also John Porter's brother-in-law, married to Anna Porter.
