John Porter
(Abt 1711 - 1781)
Email from JTL concerning the origins of John Porter:
A John, Andrew & Hugh Porter appear in the 1755 Tithables for the parrish serving the newly created Prince Edward Co VA.
Where did John & Mary land in the colonies, and where were they betwen 1740 and 1755? Most legends revolve around the John M Porter 1872 outline which states John & Mary (Anthony) Porter came from Belfast in 1740 - again without proof. Certainly there are records of the Ulster ties of the Carsons, Hays, Owens and McAllisters, families with whom the Porters intermarred early, but I have found nothing for John or Mary. Some say they went to southeast PA , a safe assumption for any Scotch Irish family, where they were associated with Revs John Thomson and his son-in-law Richard Sankey. In fact, Rev Sankey witnessed John's 1781 will. Clearly, Thomson was one of the original explorers of the central VA area in 1739, and Sankey brought his Hanover congregation there, but not until 1759.
