Individual Details

George Wiley Haden

(1822 - )

Probably listed twice in 1860.
In Macon Co AL, Northern Division, in 1860 as G. W. Hayden. Occupation Farmer. Value of real estate $10,000, Personal property $50,000. Age 40, born in Tennessee.
Nancy T., age 50, b. AL. Joseph W. age 16. Price P. age 14, Rebecca age 12, and Nancy age 7. p.881, Hh 505.
Then listed in Southern Division of Macon Co may be still another enumeration of this family:
Geo. W. Haden, age 38, b. TN. Farmer. Value of real estate $7,000 & personal property, $18,000.
Mrs. Nancy, age 40, b. AL
Joseph W. age 16. Evan P. age 14. Asenath age 11. Nancy Y. age 6.
and living with his family is a small boy, Abednigo Dick, age 6. p.803, Hh 753

Strangely the 1850 Census of Macon Co also had a G. W. Haden. The information given for him is totally inconsistent except for the age of the two men. The G. W. Haden of 1850 is listed as born in 1822, but in Georgia. With him is a lady of the same birth year, born in Alabama and children Joseph age 8, William 6, Nancy 4, and Sarah 2. G. W. is listed following a Joseph Haden, whose information is also thoroughly confusing.

Alabama 1860 Agricultural & Manufacturing Census, transcribed by Linda L. Green. 2000. Reprinted by Willow Bend Books 2002.
Macon Co
Geo. W. Haden. 280 acres improved land. 620 acres unimproved. Value of land - $7000. Value of farm implements - $200. Value of livestock $1275.

The Alabama Civil War Service Database listed two of George's brother, Joseph & William, as serving in the Home Guard for Macon Co. A G. W. Haden served in the 1st AL Cavalry, Montgomery Mounted Rifles, Clanton's Cavalry, and a George W. Haden served in Co K, 45th AL Infantry Regt. There seems to have been two George W.'s.

Service record on Fold3 for George W. in the 45th, reveals he was a 2nd Lt., Capt. William S. Goodwyn's Company [this company became Co K]. He enlisted for duty March 15, 1862, Macon Co. for three years; W. G. Goodwyn enrolled him. Mustered in at Loachapoka. The second muster card shows his rank as 1st Lt, and gives his appointment as 19 May 1862. He was promoted to Capt., 28 Jul 1862. Dropped from the roles 4 Aug 1863, under special Order 184/6. "The Adjutant & Inspector General's Office, Confederate States, contains information relative to the man named, on the subject mentioned above."

The G. W. Haden/Hayden who served in Co K of the 1st AL was a private. He served in Capt. James Clanton's Montgomery Mounted Rifles [became Co K]. He was enlisted by Jam. H. Clanton on 30 Apr 1861, Montgomery, AL. He was age 38 [b. 1823]. Discharged 8 Aug 1861 by L. W. O'Bannon and received a voucher for his pay of $96.70. he was paid for three months and nine days at $12 per month and 40 cents per day for his horse. He also received travel money. They were attached to the 1st Brigade near Pensacola so he was paid 10 cents per mile for 175 miles from Warrenton, FL to Montgomery, AL. An attached letter gives his age as 40 and describes him as 5 feet 10 inches, light complexion, blue eyes and dark hair and by profession a planter. He is entitled to a dischage for reason of surgeons certificate of inability to perform the duties of a soldier. Signed by Jas. H. Clanton, Commanding Company.

Note: The above terms of service do not overlap - it is possible that it could have been the same man

1870 Census. Pinelevel, Montgomery Co AL
George W. Haden, age 48, planter, b. TN
Nora G. age 52, b. Alabama
Nancy Y. age 14.

If I found the correct George W "Haydon" in 1880, he was then age 58, born TN, mother and father both born in North Carolina. However, in 1880 he had wife Martha J. who was age 41 [b.1839], born in Alabama, her parents born in GA. He was living in Bullock Co, p.123A in the census. No children at home. Delila and Cinda Ann Stowers, listed as Black, were servants.
