Hester Rochester

(Abt 1753 - 1812)

29 August 1758. (Uncle) William Rochester was appointed by the Westmoreland Co Court as the guardian of the five children of John Rochester, deceased - all were presumably under the age of 14. A commission was appointed to settle the accounts of John Rochester's estate for the benefit of the widow now married to Thomas Critcher and each of the children.

Marriage bond dated 13 Nov 1770. Thomas Crutcher was surety for Rubin Piles to marry "Elesh Rogester", both of Granville Co. Signatures read Reuben Piles and Thomas Critcher.

Her name is also seen as Mary Esther and even Elizabeth - she was obviously named for her mother. Hester/Esther being interchangeable.

There are discrepancies in the names of the children. Louis/Lewis, born 1800, was apparently the youngest and left the following in a brief autobiography:
"I am the youngest of fifteen that my mother bore, five of which soon died before my recollection. Five sisters, four bro, and myself lived to raise large familys all of whome are now gone I hope to that upper and better world. My mother died about the year 1812 or 14. My father lived to 100 years of age or upwards and died between the year 1835 or 40."

Find A Grave Memorial # 40214594 has the following list of children which accounts for 14 children. Likely the two sets of twins did not survive and there are four brothers as Louis states: Abner, John, Reuben, and William. Five sisters: Elizabeth, Essie, Sarah, Nancy, & Mary Esther. But that still leaves one child not noted - possibly another infant who died.

Often seen is another daughter - a Sarah Ann Pyles, b. September of 1770 (Hester & Reuben had married in November of 1770 - which seems a bit odd, plus the fact that was another daughter Sarah born in 1778. She is said to have married William Thomas Dodson and moved to Alabama. But the Dodson family was in Prince William/Fauquier Counties - not at all where the Rochesters were living. The distinct possibility remains that the families could have encountered each other in South Carolina after both moved there. I very much suspect the two Sarahs are one and the same and someone transcribed the 1778 birthdate wrong.
