An autobiography of Lewis found in a trunk belonging to Ola Pyles (Lewis's
grandaughter through Abner Pyles).
"Lewis Pyles was born in the state of South Carolina, Laurens District, 22nd of August, A.D. 1800. My Father's given name was Reuben. My Mother's maiden name was Essy Rogester. My parents were of Welch descent, born and raised in Virginia. I am the youngest of fifteen that my mother bore, five of which soon died before my recollection. Five sisters, four bro, and myself lived to raise large familys all of whome are now gone I hope to that upper and better world. My mother died about the year 1812 or 14. My father lived to 100 years of age or upwards and died between the year 1835 or 40. My mother was Baptist in faith. My father a ridgid Calvinist. After the death of my mother, I was turned loose upon the world and left pretty much to my own inclinations. My father having married the second time and but little attention paid to me except by my sister Polly who was as a mother to me. The most of my education was received at Kinsbrough Academy, Laurance Dist. S.C. Made three different trips to Alabama and Missip in my youthful days. Becoming a little more settled in mind, turned my attention to farming. Lived three years a batchelor life at the end of which time bought me a home in Abbeville District.
Marryed Catherine Wiatt Perrin 26 of March 1826. Remained in Abbeville untill Jan 1st 1833. Moved and settled in Tallas(? perhaps an abbreviation for Talledega) county [now Calhoun county] before the removal of the Indians at which time there were but few whites in the country, little or no morality in the country. Spent the most of my time in wickedness thinking but little of a future state. During that time my companion died which had but little affect on my hardened impenitant heart. Married my second wife in 40 yet remained a hard hearted and impenitant mortal untill it pleased God to deprive me of my firstborn son [assuming he means William Reuben, his son by Catherine, who died in 1846] which occasioned much reflection and anxiety. Found no peice or comfort untill about the last of Aug or first of Sept. I arose from my bed before daylight in Prayer to God at which time I found peace through merits of a crusifiyed Savior and was baptised by Elder Talyer in Sept 1846. And thanks be to God have never repented of that act to this day. I have often had my -?-, my hopes and fears endeavored to do some good for my, the Master's cause and am sorry that I have done no more or have given of my means to build of his kingdom. I was the founder of the Boiling Spring Association which has grown to
be a respectable and influential body of which I was Clerk for several years.
This looks of egotism but hoping it may be a satisfaction to my children and pen it down. Should my children think proper to have any religious exersise after my death it is my desire that they secure Bro. Milton Carter to preform that last solemn act and that he take for his text the 4 verse in the 23 Psalm.
Though I walk throught the vally of the shadow of death I will fear no evil for thou are with me thy rod and they staff they comefort me."
