John Rochester

(Abt 1746 - Dec 1794)

29 August 1758. (Uncle) William Rochester was appointed by the Westmoreland Co Court as the guardian of the five children of John Rochester, deceased - all were presumably under the age of 14. A commission was appointed to settle the accounts of John Rochester's estate for the benefit of the widow now married to Thomas Critcher and each of the children.

by 25 August 1761, Ann & John, orphans of John Rochester, dec'd made choice of Thomas Critcher for their guardian - obviously now over age 14.

28 Oct 1767. John Rochester purchased from Gerard Hutt, Sr, Gentleman and Mary his wife, 100 acres of land in Cople adjoining land of his father, John Rochester which was owned by his mother, Esther Critcher as her dower right.

28 Sep 1773. John Rochester puchased from Thomas Critcher, his stepfather, the land whereon the said Thomas Critcher formerly lived it being his wife's dower from her late husband, John Rochester, Dec'd.

He served as sheriff, a captain in the militia, and in 1785 was vestryman, Cople Parish.

SAR Application states that John served as Capt in the VA Militia, 1777, 1779-1780. Property in Richmond Co VA was impressed; adjustment made 3 Ap1782 (Tyler's Quarterly 7, 108, "Military Claims in Richmond County"

His will instructed his son John, to be guardian of his brother and sisters. In October, 1798, those underage were Hannah, Nathaniel, Jane, Artemisha and Sophia.

I am a 4th great niece of Nathaniel Rochester and 4th great grandaughter of John Rochester and Ann Jordan, their daughter, Sophia, was my 3rd great grandmother. I have an article in my possession that was published in "Rochester History" January 1962, that is a nice bio of Nathaniel. His brother, John, was in fact married twice. He married his first wife Ann Jordan, daughter of Robert Jordan, of Cople Parish, Westmoreland County, VA, in 1766. He married his second wife, Ann McClannahan, June 9, 1794. His first marriage to Ann Jordan produced 11 children.
Note: most of dates, marriages, regarding children are from this source.

The house built by William Rochester, his grandfather, is on the National Historic Register. John inherited this property. Application is here:

"The Rocester family owned the property from 1689 until 1798. English immigrant Nicholas Rochester and his son, William, for whom the house was built, settled in Westmoreland in late 1689. William's grandson, John, resided on the plantation from 1766 until his death in 1794. John was an active and influential resident of Westmoreland County, where he held positions in the militia, the church, and in public office. John's younger brother, Nathaniel, settled in western New York State where he founded the city of Rochester in the early nineteenth century."
