Little is known about Amos West before he settled in Logan Co KY circa 1792. An early researcher states he was born 1766 in Louisa Co VA and reared in Orange Co NC, without giving any source.

A J. J. Jepson of Simpson Co KY, wrote notes about Amos West, in 1940, for a church commemoration service, and Mrs. Stebbins copied them in 1957.

Amos West was taxed in Sumner Co TN 1789 - 1791. He married Frances Herndon there. By 1792, he was taxed in Logan Co KY with 150 acres on the Whipporwill. He continued to be taxes in ensuing years.

19 Jul 1796. Peter Cartwright assigned Certificate #570 for 200 acres to Amos West.
In Aug of that year, Amos purchased 100 acres on the Little Whipporwill fro Richard Maulding.

A survey, 2 Sep 1796 - 200 acres on Little Whipporwill mentions a corner to Richd. Mauldin and James Herndon's line. Chain carriers were Leonard West and Elisha Herndon.

10 Dec 1796. 200 acres on Tarpin Creek was surveyed for Amos West

28 May 1797. Patent for 200 acres, surveyed 2 Sep 1796, was issued to Amos West under the Act for the "Relief of Settlers on the South Side of Green River"

1 Oct 1799. Amos and Leonard West were chain carriers for survey of 100 acres of Lucy Fike.

James West settled on the Red River in Logan Co before 1800. He married (1) Mourning Howard, 30 Sep 1807 and (2) Susan Morgan, 9 Feb 1808. My Note: These marriages are suspiciously close together - could there have been two Wests named James? Both would seem to have taken place rather late in James' life.

William West served in the Revolution, settled in Logan Co in 1808, land he purchased from John Neely, Jr. He is said to have had a large family and moved to Calloway Co about 1820, but later moved back to Simspon Co. A daughter Ann married Dr. Jesse Milliken. A daughter Elcy married James Milliken either in Orange co NC or Logan Co.

Leonard West Sr married Phoebe Morgan at Morgan's Station about 1798. He served in the Revolution and filed for his pension in Calloway Co KY, 1833. He also returned to Simpson Co and was buried on his headright obtained, 1799.

Richard West settled on Spring Creek in Logan Co prior to 1795, where he had a mill.

Amos West is said to have married (1) in Tennessee about 1790 to Frances Herndon, daughter of James Herndon. - their children born in Logan Co.
Amos married (2) Ann Thompson [probably also previously married, 18 Apr 1808, Logan Co KY. She apparently had no children.

The 1800 Tax list which serves as the "Second Census of Kentucky" shows the following Wests living in Logan Co: Amos, James, Leonard, Richard, and William.


By 1812, Amos West was being taxed on over 1000 acres of land. He and wife Ann sold several tracts after that year.

May the 6th AD 1819. I Amos West being at this time in a Low state of
health but in intire Strength of mind do feell it injoind on me to make
this my Last will and Testament (Viz) I do here will to my beloved wife
Anne
one negro Girl called Charlotte during hir life or widowhood also
the third of the Land whereon I now live Including the house &c agreeable
to a true estimate of value also one third of the Stock and &c which
is not hereafter willd -- I also will to my Daughter Polly Millikin one
negroe Girl called Harrott also I will to my Daughter Isabel Holkem one
negro Girl call'd Clarion also I will to my Daughter Agness one negro
Girl called Nancy & one Sorrel mare which is now called Her's one Saddle
and Bridle which is to paid out of my estate one Cow and Calf one ewe
& Lamb one feather bed and furniture Also I do will to my Son Leonard West
Ninety Seven acres of Land where he has now improved and agreeable to
the lines laid off to him also one bed and furniture -- I also will to
my son James West one horse worth Sixty Dollars one Saddle and bridle
one feather bed and furniture one negroe boy call'd Carry I also will
to my Son Richard all the home tract & twelve & a half acre extended in
the name of Charles Vickery together with the third of the land I alot
to my wife Anne at her death or widowhood also my negroe man George I
alot to work for the Support of my present wife & two sons James &
Richard
During her life or widowhood -- I also intend that Richard to
pay to James My son Four hundred Dollars when they both become of age
all other part or parcel of my estate after the Dec'd of my wife or
Widowhood the Remains of my estate together with George shall be equally
Divided & I desire James Herndon and William Millikin to Execute this
my will day and date above Signd.
