Serajah Comstock

Serajah (or Seraiah) was named for an uncle, his mother's brother. He was a Revolutionary soldier, enlisting just after he turned 16.

1780: Serajah bought 30 acres of land in Norfolk, CT

After his first wife died, he married Climena Austin, 23 Feb 1790. She married a cousin, Reuben Austin, in January of 1827, after the death of Serajah; Reuben died in 1827. Climena was allowed pension on Serajah's War service, her application dated 7 Oct 1842, when she was age 70 and living with her child Sylvester Comstock, at Victory, Cayuga Co NY. Sylvester was then age 33. Another son, George F. Comstock, living in Syracuse, was her attorney. The file is W.16170.

Serajah Comstock married Clemina Austin, and emigrated here from Norfolk, CT in 1805. He settled at the extreme east of West Camden, on what is known as the Ostrander place, and followed farming for an occupation. In 1814 h removed to Williamstown, where he died. He was a Revolutionary soldier and enlisted in the Third Regiment of the Connecticut Line. Ten children were born to them. Two daughters died in Connecticut: Anna, Flora, Lucy, John & Samuel A., were born in Connecticut; Sylvester was born in W. Camden; Charles & Franklin in Williamstown. We find in the records of the First Church in Camden, that Mrs. Clemina Comstock was a member in 1813. After her husband's death she married a Mr. Austin of Sand Banks. In a "Western Recorder," a paper published in Utica in 1826 and edited by Thomas Hastings, this obituary appeared: "Died - In Williamstown, February 23, in the 66th year of his age, Mr. Serajah Comstock, a soldier of the Revolution, and one who also, in the judgment of charity, enlisted a few years since under the banner of the Great Redeemer. He continued to walk worthy of the profession he had made, and at last died in peace."

In 1818, Serajah gave his age as 58, a resident of Williamstown. He enlisted at Norfolk, Connecticut. From May 1775, he served 8 months in Capt John Watson's Co. From 1 Feb 1776, he served one year in Capt Titus Watson's, Co, Col. Charles Burrell's Regt. From 1 Dec 1780 in Capt Saml Williams' Co, Col. Samuel B. Webb's Regt, was transferred to Col. Swift's Regt and discharged Oct 1783 at West Point, NY.

The family moved from Norfolk, CT to Camden, Oneida Co, NY about 1805 and then to Williamstown, Oswego Co.

Serajah is buried Fairview Cemetery, Williamstown. DAR placed a memorial stone in 2003.

From the 'Western Recorder', Utica, NY in 1826: "Died-In WIlliamstown, February 23, in the 66th year of his age, Mr. Serajah Comstock, a soldier of the Revolution, and one who also, in the judgement of charity, enlisted a few years under the banner of the Great Redeamer. At the age of seventeen, Serajah Comstock enlisted, at Norfolk CT in May 1775, in the 7th Connecticut Regiment of Foot, under General Richard Montgomery. The regiment participated in the Canadian Campaign of 1775-76, and saw action at the sieges of Chambly and St. John, and the battles of Longguevil. In January 1776, he was discharged from service at Montreal.

In February 1776, he enlisted, at Montreal, for one year service in Col. Burrall's Regiment of Connecticut Line. He was engaged at Lake Champlain at Mt. Independence VT, and was present at the sinking of Gen. Waterbury's fleet on the lake. He was discharged from service by Gen. Wayne at Ft. Ticonderoga on February 1, 1777.

Serajah returned home to Connecticut. Three and a half years later, December 1, 1780, he enlisted for three years, at Norfolk CT, in the 5th Co., 3rd Connecticut Regiment, commanded by Col. Samuel B. Webb. His company commander was Capt. Samuel Wm. Williams. This regiment was active in New York and New Jersey, and at Yorktown VA.

They participated in numerous encounters with British & loyalist troops in the New York highlands, Westchester, and Kingsbridge at the Bronx River. In August 1781, they were encamped at Basking Ridge NJ, when Gen. Washington ordered the troops to move south to Yorktown VA. The Siege of of Yorktown began in September 1781.

Pvt. Serajah Comstock was present for the surrender of Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown. He remained in service for two more years. He was finally discharged in October 1783 at West Point by Gen. Knox.

He was pensioned in 1818. He Emigrated from Norfolk, CT to Camden, NY in 1805, to become a "Yankee Yorker", settling on Oswego Road, halfway between Camden and Westdale, on "Ostrander Place". In 1814, he and his wife moved to Williamstown, NY.
