George Franklin Comstock was appointed by Pres. Fillmore as Solicitor of the U.S. Treasury in 1852 and was one of the judges of the Court of Appearls, 1855-1862. He initiated the movement in 1869 to establish Syracuse University and donated $50,000 to its endowment.

George Franklin Comstock was born at Williamstown, Oswego Co on Aug 24, 1811. His father Zerajah Comstock, served through the Revolutionary War. Mr. Comstock was graduated with high honors at Union College in 1834, and then took up the study of law and was admitted to the bar in 1837. He was long a member of the law firm of Nixon Leavenworth & Comstock. He was appointed reporter of the Court of Appeals in 1847 and issued four volumes of New York reports, and President Fillmore appointed him Solicitor of the Treasury. He was elected Judge of the Court of Appeals in 1855. As a member of the Constitution Convenetion of 1868, Mr. Comstock drafted the judiciary article of the New York Constitution. His professional services brought him large returns, notably in the Vanderbilt will case and in the Cornell University suit over Jennie McGaw's bequest to the institution. He was prominent in many local enterprises and active in the management of local institutions.
Judge Comstock married a daughter of the late B. Davis Nixon, who survives with a son and daughter.
