Asa Davidson Goodman

(1810 - 1899)

My Note: IF Asa's middle name was truly Davidson, then it's an excellent possibility he is a grandson of the Jesse Goodman whose wife was Anna Davidson.

Do you have any information on Asa Davidson Goodman, born 18 Oct 1809 in Kentucky, but moved to Hickman Co., TN, where he married Katherine DePriest in 1830? They had many, many children, one of whom was my great-grandmother, Martha Jane Goodman, born 1856. I've been trying to find Asa's parents for years, but have had no luck.

Asa Davidson Goodman was born October 18, 1809 in Kentucky and died after 1880 in Humphreys County, TN. He married Catherine DePriest about 1830, probably in Hickman County, TN. Catherine died after 1880 in Humphreys County. They were living in Hickman County for the 1830 and 1840 Census, in Perry Co. for the 1850, 1860, and 1870 Census, and in Humphreys Co. in 1880. Their children:
(1) Elizabeth, born c. 1831
(2) Jane Catherine, born c. 1833
(3) Nancy A., born c. 1835
(4) Hugh A., born c. 1836
(5) Archibald W., born c. 1837 in Hickman Co.
(6) Simpson W., born c. 1841
(7) John L., born Nov. 2, 1842
(8) James K., born c. 1844
(9) Sarah Ann, born June 29, 1846
(10) Artimisia, born c. 1849
(11) Frances, born March, 1850
(12) William, born c. 1851 in Perry Co., TN
(13) Samuel, born c. 1852
(14) Howard, born c. 1854
(15) Martha Jane, born Oct. 15, 1856, died March 18, 1932
(16) Benjamin, born c. 1858 and
(17) Abner Jefferson D., born Jan., 1859, died 1948.
All of these are children of one mother. What a woman!
Simpson W. Goodman was married twice more: Narcissus E. Gossett on Dec. 4, 1869 in Perry Co. and Nancy Turner on Aug. 28, 1872. I show his children as (1) Hugh A., born c. 1859, (2) Joseph S., born July 3, 1864 in Perry Co., died May, 1936 in Benton Co., (3) Amanda E., born c. 1865 (4) Jane C., born c. 1874, and John T.H., born c. 1879. I have a lot more information on the Goodman descendants if you would like to contact me.

Hh 35 was his sister Sarah DePriest.
Living in Hh 36 was J. H. Goodman, age 30 - he doesn't appear to have been a son of Asa., but he was living with them in 1850. His wife was Elizabeth, age 30 [Is this Asa's daughter?]. Children were MaryAnn age 9; James age 7; William age 5, Frances age 1 (female).

On the next page, Hh 37
A. W. Goodman, age 21, farmer, b. TN [This would be Asa's son Arch]
Sarah, age 22.
William age 7 and Harry, age 1. [I wonder if William was their child or perhaps a nephew?]
A. W. "Arch" is said to have married his 1st cousin, a daughter of Terrell Goodman - this is confusing since the four children, heirs of Alexander Goodman, do not include a son Terrell, nor any children of a deceased son if he was not living. This is thought to be Sarah in 1850 - notice that she is older than indicated in 1860, making it much more likely for William to be her child. However, it would appear that Arch was only 14 when William was born. Was William really his child? Or simply raised by Arch?

5 Mar 1870. There was an act to change the Perry and Humphrey County lines. The lines of several landholders were to be included in Humphrey County. Goodmans included S. W. Goodman [Simpson Walker], J. H. Goodman [??? James K.???], A. D. Goodman [Asa], A. G. Goodman [??? Archibald ???], W. F. Goodman [??? - William would have been only age 20 - could this have been Hugh A. ???] I can only wonder if there were difficulties in reading the initials as the initials do not match the older sons of Asa.]

I had not been able to reliably find John L., son of Asa, until this year.

John L. Goodman, b. Nov 1842, age 57, married 25 yr, b. TN, parents born TN, farmer

I did later find John in 1870, Perry Co, living in Household 30, with Amanda Cragg age 28, James Kyle age 13, J. L. Goodman, age 28, Susan [first wife] age 26, James 6, Angeline 2, and David Hardin, age 14. I never found him in 1880.

This is likely William "Bill", another son of Asa; on the next page from John L. However, if this identification is correct, Celia is a second wife - his wife was Elizabeth in 1880. Another research gives William F. Goodman, married Elizabeth Miller, 23 Jan 1885 in Benton Co but gives his birth as 1858.

Living in the household just before William Goodman, there is a Mary A. Goodman, designated as "Aunt". She was born Jan 1852, age 48, marked as "D" for divorced and living with John and Willie Daniel and their six-year-old son, Otis.

Eagle Creek Baptist Church was founded in the summer of 1887. The first pastor was Elder J. C. Park. The congregation build a church on land owned by D.D. Byrd. Services were held there until the building slid off it's foundation during service in 1917. Church services were held at the home of members, or on special occasions, at the Rock College School on Opposum Creek until 1919. By 1922 services were being held at the new church on Byrds Hill, located on the North side of Eagle Creek about 3/4 mild East of Highway 191. The land for the church and cemetery was donated by D.D. Byrd.
Asa & Katie are buried in this cemetery, as well as William "Bill", Simpson, Elizabeth and John.
