If this is the same James H. Goodman, where were these sons in 1900? And Pearl? If there were two men named James H. almost the same age, then it's easy to see why Asa's son may have gone by the name Howard.
There is a Senn Goodman, age 28, next door in Hh 14. He is age 28, married 2 times; the last time for 5 years. Wife is Ada, age 20 and she's had 2 children - Charlie 4 and Melvin 1 6/12.
