Dorothy PLEDGE
(Abt 1736 - 26 May 1796)
Dorothy is not seen in any of the publications as a daughter of William Pledge & Ann Redford. She is listed that way in the LDS Ancestral File. And certainly William Pledge might have named a daughter for his mother. She married John Woodall, 12 Aug 1756, so she would likely have been older than Elizabeth & Frank Pledge. The Pettit book suggests that William had a brother John and it is quite possible Dorothy is John's daughter, not William's [very doubtful, see below] There are three children of John Woodall and Dorothea Pledge recorded in the Douglas Register: Matthew, born 14 May 1757 and baptized 31 Jul 1757; Robert born 7 Feb 1759 and baptized 29 Apr 1759; and Aggie, born 15 Mar 1761, baptized 6 Jun 1761. Sometime after the births of these children, the Woodhall family moved to Georgia.
There is another question about children of William's brother John. In the will of William's father, John Pledge, John charged his son-in-law John Johnson with the life-long care of his son John Pledge, indicating he might have some sort of disability; perhaps he did not father any children.
No daughter of this name was listed in the will of William Pledge and Dorothy was apparently still living in 1796, when her Woodall husband made out his will. Of course children who have already received gifts, moved away, or fallen from favor can be omitted from a will.

I am researching my Woodall family. I ran across your website because of Dorothy Pledge. I had found another entry at LDS indicating that Dorothy was daughter of William Pledge and Ann Redford - your site doesn't list her as one of their children. I have no record of her parents at all.
My Dorothy Pledge is listed in our family records as being born in Henrico, VA - I don't have a date of birth but probably around 1735-40. She married John Woodall in 1756 in Goochland, VA. They subsequently moved to GA and she died in Wilkes County, GA. John Woodall died there in 1798.
Do you see any connection with your Pledge family?
Thanks,
Sherrie Johnson
