John married Margaret "Hetty" Thornton 13 Apr 1782 in Caroline Co MD. This is probably the date the license was issued. They probably had at least five children. In 1790, there were two sons and a daughter; in 1800 there was no longer a daughter, but there were four sons. Two of the sons have been identified as Derius and Thomas. They are not found after 1800.
