Individual Details

James WILLIAMS

( - )

James said to be noted for great physical strength. He served in the Revolution; fought in 13 battles but was never wounded. Said to have been taken prisoner and had smallpox while in prison; he was liberated on parole but went home and re-enlisted. Said to have fought at King's Mountain, the Battle of the Cowpens and Eutau Springs. He married a Tory girl, Mary Young, and moved to St. Augustine, Florida.

The above seems to be a wildly exaggerated story. It is true that a number of the Tories moved to Spanish East Florida during and following the Revolution. There was a Col. James Williams who fought and died at King's Mountain and I suspect part or all of his record has been "assumed" to be that of Ambrose's son James. Col. James Williams is the only man of that name that is in the DAR Patriot database. A James Williams who served from North Carolina had a wife named Elizabeth.
