Individual Details
Richard Freelon Pippin
(1 Mar 1837 - 20 Jun 1913)
Richard enlisted in Company B, 28th TN Infantry [Confederate] at Camp Zollicoffer, TN on 7 Sep 1861 for two years or duration. He also was a corporal in Company B, 28th TN Infantry [Consolidated]. Richard made application for his pension. He stated he was not discharged but let off from his command at Tullahoma TN on 2nd or 3rd Jul 1863. His application was accepted.
1 Nov 1880, a grand jury for Jackson Co TN found that on 1 Nov 1880, William Berry robbed John Pippin of $65. The money was the property of Richard Freelon Pippin, John's father. William Berry was tried, sentenced for 10 years & sent to the state penitentiary in Nashville.
The newspaper report in the GAINSBORO SENTINEL in January of 1881, stated that Berry's citizenship had been restored and he had been brought up to testify against his confederate, Harv Pippin. [They were not only confederates in robbery, but also fist cousins.] Apparently Harve planned the robbery & hired Berry to carry it out. Harv was then sentenced to ten years. Harve was the son of Kinchen and Pollie [Berry] Pippin and was also a first cousin to
Richard Freelon Pippin.
Richard is buried Double Springs Cemetery in Punam Co TN as is his 3rd wife Sarah. The first and second wives are both buried Whitson Cemetery.
