Col. John West

(14 Dec 1590 - 1659)

John West matriculated at Magdalen College in England 17 Feb 1608/9 and received his Bachelor of Arts degree on 1 Dec 1613.

John West came to Virginia in 1618 aboard the "Bonny Bess". ["The Bonny Besse" is said to have come in Aug 1623; she had later voyages but I find no earlier ones - but see note at the end.] After the massacre of 1622, he commanded a company against the Indians. He was a member of the House of Burgesses, a member of the Council, a Justice of York County. He served as Governor of the Virginia Colony from May 1635 to 18 Jan 1637. He was among the first to patent lands on King's Creek of the York River, a planatation known as "Bellfield", which he sold to Edward Digges in 1650. John later moved to the fork of the York River on the site of the present town of West Point. Patent was issued 6 Mar 1654 for 3000 acres [Cavaliers, Vol I, p.295] which included 850 acres granted 3 Jul 1652 [Cavaliers, Vol. 1, p.258]. 6 May 1651, he had received 1550 acres [Cavaliers, Vol 1, p.213] which he later sold to Maj. William Lewis. On 27 May 1654, Col. John West patented 1000 acres in Gloucester County on the NE side of the Mattaponi River [Cavaliers, Vol. 1, p.232]. This 1000 acres was assigned by his son Capt West, & renewed in the name of Thos. Ramsey on 10 Mar 1661. John West died at his West Point plantation 1659 and in March of 1660, the House of Burgesses passed a resolution in recognition of the many services rendered to Virginia by the noble family of West.

Here are some of the earliest neighbors:
CAVALIERS, Vol I
p.14 25 Apr 1632 Capt Robert Felgate patented 350 acres on the Kikeyacke on Pamunkey River, East upon gound of Capt John West. For transport of himself, his son & 4 servants who came in the William & John, 1628, being granted by order of Court 7 Dec. 1630.
p.70 29 Aug 1637 Capt Fobert Felgate patented 250 acres, Charles River Co. East upon land of Capt. John West. Due for advance of himself & 4 persons, the first year to the said plantation of Charles River.
p.72 26 Sep 1637 Francis Morgan, 100 acres, Charles River Co. W. by S. upon devdt. of Capt John West.
p.152 19 Oct 1643 Joseph Croshawe, 350 acres, South end of the Indian Field, parallel with his own land until it meets with the land of Capt Jno. West

Is this his father-in-law? I believe the surname of wife Anne is not proved. Claiborne is one of the suggestions for her surname:
p.244 of CAVALIERS, Vol 1 1 Sep 1653 Col. William Claiborne, Esqr, Sec. of State of this Colony, 5000 acres on N side of Pamunkey River in the Narrowes, on the mouth of a creek called Maddaquine, parting same from land of Capt John West. Running to a point of land where the sd Col. Clayborne landed the Army under his command in 1644. A correction deed following states that the 5000 acres is at Pamunkey on the N side of the freshes of York River, bounded on the E with Mattadaquin Creek on the S side of the York.
Other researches have stated that Anne was the only child of George Percy and his wife Ann Floyd. Some researchers show that he married both Annes.

John West, the Second, was their only child.
Colonel John West died at his West Point plantation, 1659, and March 1660 the House of Burgesses passed a resolution of good will in recognition of "the many important favors and services rendered to the country of Virginia by the noble family of West, predecessors of Mr. John West, their now only survivor ..... It is ordered that the levies of the said Master West and his family be remitted, and that he be exempt from payment thereof during life".
