John West II

(6 Jun 1632 - 1691)

The Council of Virginia on 6 Jun 1632 recognized the birth of John and granted his father 2000 acres in his honor, he being "the first Christian child born on the York River". He was likely sent to England for his education and returned about 1651, at which time Gov. John West claimed land for the entry of Himself, his wife Ann, and son John.

Colonel John West died at his West Point plantation, 1659, and March 1660 the House of Burgesses passed a resolution of good will in recognition of "the many important favors and services rendered to the country of Virginia by the noble family of West, predecessors of Mr. John West, their now only survivor ..... It is ordered that the levies of the said Master West and his family be remitted, and that he be exempt from payment thereof during life".

John lived on the plantation at West Point patented by his father, "Westover". Served as a Captain, Major & Lt. Col. in the Militia 1652-73. He was loyal to Gov. Berkeley during Bacon's Rebellion and sat as a member of the court-martial which tried the insurgents. His land became part of New Kent Co in 1654. In 1680 he was senior Justice of New Kent County. He served in the House of Burgesses and the first session of the 1691-92 Assembly. He died about 1691
Children were Anne, John, Thomas, and Nathaniel.

There is an interesting story concerning the signing of the treaty at the conclusion of Bacon's Rebellion, 20 Feb 1677. It is said the Cockacoeskie, Queen of the Pamunky Indians had with her, her twenty year old son, John West, who acted as interpreter. Her son was reputed to be the son of an English colonel, for whom the locality "West Point" had been named.

John West is said to have had will dated 15 Nov 1689 which was lost.

Some sources state that Ann was the only daughter of John West and Unity Croshaw. I have also seen suggested a daughter Unity who married Capt. William Dandrige - but then Unity is also placed as a daughter of John's son Nathaniel. I have seen a marriage date for a daughter of Unity and William Dandridge as 1739, indicating they would have married perhaps 1715-1720 and this Unity born sometime around 1700 or slightly before. Since John West died about 1691, it would seem most reasonable that Unity was not his daughter, but a granddaughter.
