Capt Thomas WEST

(Abt 1670 - Abt 1714)

I have seen Thomas most often listed with a wife named Agnes, surname unknown. Some doubt seems to exist as to whether or not he belongs in the family, but certainly Thomas was a given name often used. He lived in King William County - one of the counties of Virginia that has few existing records from the colonial period. There is also stated that he had a wife Frances sometime after the daughter Agnes was born.

It is possible that Thomas West was married to a wife prior to Agnes, but that would depend on when he married Agnes. A date of 20 Aug 1703 has been stated. If he married then, that it's likely his sons Nathaniel and Thomas were the result of an earlier marriage - they seem to have been born in the early 1690's. Thomas and Agnes had a daughter they named Ages, born maybe 1704, 1705 - she married Richard Gregory. If there was a third wife, Frances, she may have been the mother of Thomas' youngest son, Francis.

Son Nathaniel died, without issue, will dated 2 Jul 1727; the will has been lost. Other records indicate he owned two tracts - one of 1000 acres that was contained his "home house'; the other was "Apperchanking's Old Field of 615 acres. His brother Thomas was devised the home tract; brother Francis the other, which had been devised and entailed by John West their grandfather to their father Thomas West. Francis had already made improvements on this land, perhaps without knowing of the entail.

Thomas West's son Thomas had already inherited "West Point" in New Kent Co from his first cousin Charles, son of John West III. Charles died without issue in 1734. He took possession of Nathaniel's home tract but apparently left it to decay and ruin, choosing to live at West Point. He also sued Francis for the Apperchanking tract and regained it - under primogeniture the land should have descended to the next brother when Nathaniel died without issue, not to a younger brother. However, when Thomas died, about 1743, he had appointed Martha West his executrix and required her to go before the Assembly and vest the Apperchanking tract in fee simple to his brother Francis West according to the intentions of Nathaniel West and if that failed the home tract was to descend to Francis. The Assembly did deed Apperchanking's Old Field to Francis in fee simple. The Home tract was then entailed to Thomas's heirs. Thomas married Mary Cole who married Ferdinando Leigh after the death of Thomas.

Thomas West's daughter Agnes married Richard Gregory of King William Co.

Thomas West's youngest son, Francis, lived until 28 Jun 1796, said to have died at age 94, but there is no good record of his birth. He served as a Justice and Burgess in King William Co. He married (1st) Susannah Littlepage and (2nd) Jane (Cole) Claiborne Bingham who was the widow of Nathaniel Claiborne, son of Thomas Claiborne and Anne Fox, and Stephen Bingham.
