Priscilla FOX

(8 Jan 1778 - 5 Dec 1847)

I believe this to be Priscilla:
Find A Grave Memorial# 68449236
Birth: Jan. 8, 1778 Mecklenburg Co., Virginia
Death: Dec. 5, 1847 Mecklenburg Co., Virginia
Spouse:
James Taylor (12 Apr 1770; 14 Oct 1827]
Burial:
Taylor Family Cemetery, South Hill, Mecklenburg Co., Virginia

Virginia Marriages 1740-1850 has Priscilla Fox to James Taylor, Jr., 9 Dec 1801, Mecklenburg, VA.

Caution - Confabulation of different men named James Taylor!
James Taylor also appears in some databases to have had an earlier wife, Nancy White, who he married 1 Oct 1796, Craven Co, NC. Two children are listed - John D. Taylor, b. 1801, and Shadrack Taylor, b. 1820. There were surely other children. Further examination proves this cannot be the same James Taylor - he had many children with Nancy White at the same time he was actually living in Mecklenburg with Priscilla and having children with her. There were obviously two different James Taylors with different wives and children, though of comparable age.

This family seems to be correct for James Taylor and Prisclla Fox - see the census information to follow. I have no proof concerning his parents.
From WorldConnect files re James Taylor Jr.
Father: James, Sr. Taylor b: Abt. 1742 in Surry County Virginia
Mother: Rebecca Davis
Marriage 1 Priscilla Fox b: 8 Jan 1778 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia
Married: 10 Dec 1801 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia
Children
Elizabeth F. Taylor b: 27 Sep 1802
John James Taylor b: 2 Nov 1804 in Virginia
William Henry Taylor b: 29 Oct 1808
George W. Taylor b: 3 Apr 1810
Mary K. Taylor b: 16 Oct 1811
Rebecca Davis Taylor b: 16 Oct 1811
Edwin Samuel Taylor b: 23 May 1816 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia

Unfortunately the 1800 and 1810 census for Mecklenburg County VA are lost - that would be why no James Taylor, who married Priscilla Fox, shows up in that county. I feel quite sure he was right there all along.

The 1820 Mecklenburg census is highly compatible with the family of James Taylor & Priscilla Fox as shown:
1820 - James Taylor in Mecklenburg: 1m under 10, 3 m 10-16, 1m over 45. 2f under 10, 2f 16-26, 1f 26-45. And he was a slaveholder with 8 slaves. If you break this down and match to the reported children - the male under 10 was Edwin; Mary & Rebecca, were twins under age 10. George, William Henry & John James would have been the three males age 10 to 16 and Elizabeth one of the females between 16 & 26. Based on her birth date in 1778, Priscilla would have been age 42. Other than the extra young lady, this is a perfect match to the James Taylor who married Priscilla Fox. It is not the family of Martha White and her James Taylor.

Then by 1830, it is supposed that James Taylor was dead - no Elizabeth Taylor was in Mecklenburg, but as a widow she may have been living with a child, at least four of whom were by then old enough to be in their own household.

Researchers of a Stephen Taylor, born 1809 or 1811 in NC, believe he should be included in the family of Priscilla and her James Taylor. However, evidence is lacking. He was of an age to be one of their children but could scarcely fit between William Henry and George W., or their twin sisters, and the 1820 census doesn't allow for 4 young sons. However, any of these factors could be erroneous. Most of the children of Priscilla ended up in Izard or Dallas County, Arkansas.

I cannot vouch for the family of the James Taylor who married Nancy White, but these are their suggested children:
Marriage 1 Nancy White b: 1775 in Virginia, USA
Married: OCT 1796 in Craven, North Carolina, USA. Nancy is buried in Greene Co, MO, having died in 1864.
Children
Edward Taylor b: 1796 in North Carolina, USA
Joseph Taylor b: 1797 in North Carolina, USA
John D Taylor b: 1801 in Craven, North Carolina, USA
Jesse Taylor b: 1803 in North Carolina, USA
James Taylor b: 1806 in North Carolina, USA
Stephen Taylor b: 1809 in North Carolina, USA
Mary Taylor b: 1812 in Tennessee, USA
Henry Taylor b: 1812 in North Carolina, USA
Sarah Taylor b: 6 JUL 1813 in Kentucky, USA
Margaret S Taylor b: 4 JAN 1819 in Kentucky, USA
Shadrick Taylor b: 1820 in Madison, Alabama, USA
