The births of William and several of his siblings are listed as Fauquier Co - but this county was not formed until 1759. [The parent county was Prince William which was formed in 1730 from King George Co..]

William married Nancy Ann Metcalfe, daughter of John Metcalfe & Diana Watkins. Along with his parents, Thomas & Mary Rose Stamps, William leased lands in Fauquier Co from John Scott of Prince William Co VA. Joseph Dodson of Hamilton Parish, Fauquier Co, deeded land to William Stamps, wheel right, for good will and affection of the love of God. Land was on Barker's Creek for a new Baptist Church. Witnesses: John Creel, Thomas Dodson, Jr., James B. Shackelford.

.....On September 13, 1769, William Stamps and William Nash were chosen to "act upon trial as elders"...

He appears to have been one of the 10 founding members of the Broad Run Church on 3 Dec 1762, along with Joshua and Thomas Dodson and their wives. A notation of "deceased" by his name had caused some to believe he died on this date, but this note was added later. He was appointed clerk as late as 1773.


William Stamps wrote his will on April 25, 1771; at which time his wife Ann was with child. He died 1772 in Fauquier Co., VA. His will was probated March 23, 1772. Widow Nancy Ann Stamps, accompanied by her brother, Captain John Metcalfe, and her sons, John & William Stamps,along with Mary Morin (who later married her son William), went to Kentucky. Nancy Ann lived with her brother, John, in Kentucky. In her old age she was mentally confused and had to be rocked in a "Mamy bench". She was over 100 years old when she died.

Following is the will of William Stamps:
"In the name of God, Amen: 25th April 1771, I, William Stamps of the County of Fauquier, being in a low state of health, but of sound and perfect mind and memory, blessed by Almighty God, however, calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that its appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following, that is to say:

"First and principally, I commend my Soul into the hands of Almighty God who gave it, hoping through the Masiah, dead and profession of my Blessed Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, to receive full and free pardon and forgiveness of all my sins, and to inherit Everlasting life, and my body I commit to the earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my exor hereafter named, and as for settling my temporal estate, which it hath pleased Almighty God to bestow on me, I give and dispose of as followeth:

"Imprimis, my will is that all my just debts and funeral expenses shall be paid and discharged.

"Item, I give my dear and loving wife Ann Stamps the use of all my estate both real and personal during her widowhood and if my said wife should think proper to marry, then my will is that she shall have only one third of my said estate to make use of as she think proper during her natural life, and at my said wife's marriage, my will is that two thirds part of my estate shall be equally divided amongst all my children,including the infant now unborn, provided it shall live till that time,and at my said wife's death my will is that all the remainder of my said estate shall be also equally divided amongst my said children as abovementioned.

"Item, I do appoint my living friends William Hunton and Robert Sanders executors of this last will and testament.

"In witness whereof I have set my hand and seal this day and year first above written.
