Elijah Sebastian
(1772 - 10 Oct 1853)
Elijah and Sarah Dennis were married by Nathaniel Cook, 1813, in Ste Genevieve Co. Filed for record 15 Nov 1844 in St. Francois Co.
1830 Census in St. Francois Co MO, Liberty Twp. 2m -5 [William & Benjamin], 1m 10-15 [Daniel], 1m 15-20 [E. B.], 1m 50-60 [Elijah]; 1f 10-15 [Phebe]; 1f 40-50 [Sarah - 2nd wife]
1850 Census, St. Francois Co MO. p.159, Household 106. Elijah Sebastian age 78, b. VA. Sarah age 67, b. NC. Benjamin 29, William 26, Permelia 22, Sarah 20, and Palitha P.S., 6 months old, a male child. All the younger folks born in Missouri. Permelia was the wife of William, Sarah the wife of Benjamin, as proved by marriage records in St. Francois, but many have assumed they were additional daughters of Elijah. The baby must have been the child that would appear in 1860 as Benjamin Franklin, son of William & Permelia, age 11.
Found in a WorldConnect file:
Elijah died without a will, but according to the administration papers, burial expenses were dated Oct. 10, 1853. The youngest son, William, was administrator. Included in the sale of personal property was one black bull sold to Benjamin Sebastian for $14.00. Final settlement in 1857 listed the heirs as follows: (each received $67.96)
Martin Sebastian, a child [there are some indications Martin was Martin Chandler, indentured to Elijah at age two, but he was obviously treated as a full-blood child by the estate settlement. Was he actually Elijah's child, but perhaps not the first wife's?]
