Individual Details

Abraham ADAMSON

(14 Sep 1790 - 11 Oct 1863)

Enos Adamson was surety for the marriage of Abraham & Eleanor.

1812, 7, 25. Abraham was disowned from the Lost Creek Monthly Meeting for marrying contrary to discipline. Eleanor Adamson, formerly Lewis, was disowned the same day for the same reason so apparently their transgression was not marrying a non-Quaker, but something else. As their marriage was recorded in Jefferson Co records, perhaps they were married by a Justice of the Peace. Apparently all was forgiven.
1814, 11, 26. Abraham Adamson was received by request into the Lost Creek MM.
1815, 11, 25 Eleanor Adamson was received by request.
1816, 2, 24 Evan & John, children of Abraham, were received by request of their father.
1819, 5, 29 Abram and family were granted a certificate to Newberry MM, Blount Co, TN. Eleanor was granted certificate the same day. But they moved back to Lost Creek.
1823, 2, 22 Abraham & family (s: Evan, John, Benjamin & Enos) were received on certificate from Newberry MM, dated 1822, 12, 7. On the same day Eleanor and daughter Elizabeth were also received on certificate from Newberry.
Then they went back to Newberry because they were granted certificates for Newberry MM TN, 1827, 5, 26.

1850 Census. Jasper Co, Iowa
Hh 168 Abram Adamson, age 61, b. TN; Eleanor, age 60, b. TN
Elisha 19, born "Ia" which I believe was Indiana - this enumerator wrote out the word "Iowa" for those born there - this is a common error of transcriptionists who don't understand "Ia" was an abbreviation for Indiana at that time.
Lewis, age 26 and Henry age 22, born born in Tennessee
Ira, age 20 and Rachel age 16, both born in Indiana [Rachel could have been a wife of one of the sons]
I suspect Evan, Thomas, & Benjamin also found on this page were also sons of Abraham:

Hh 163 Evan Adamson, age 37, b. TN, Elizabeth, age 28, b. NC
Francis [male] age 12 and Mary age 10, born Indiana
Clarinda 7 and Sarah 5, born in Missouri
Abraham 4, and Evan, age 2, both born in Iowa

Hh 165 Thomas Adamson, age 37, b. TN [were Evan & Thomas twins? or is this a cousin - there was no son of this name submitted for membership in the monthly meetings - nor is there a Thomas in the estate settlements of Abraham & Eleanor.]
Elizabeth, age 34, b. Ohio.
Valentine, age 16 and Robert age 10, born Indiana
Mariah, age 6, born Missouri
Martha, age 3, Caroline age 7 months, both born in Iowa.

Hh 167 Benjamin Adamson, age 28, b. TN
Sarah, age 24, b. Indiana
Margaret age 17, b. Missouri [she certainly cound not be their child - was she another sister of Benjamin's?]
Rachel, age 1, born Iowa

Checking back in Indiana in 1840, I found in Huntington Co, IN, the four young men. The problem is that at the top of each of the pages is written "Madison Co". Madison Co is missing from the browse index of counties, yet it became a county in 1823. Further searching reveals that the majority of pages indexed as Huntington are actually Madison Co Indiana.
So in Madison Co are:
Evin Adamson: 1m -5, 1m 20-30; 1f -5, 1f 20-3
John Adamson: 1m 20-30, 1f 15-20
Seth Adamson: 1m 30-40, 1f -5, 1f 5-10, 1f 10-15, 1f 20-30 [probably Abraham's younger brother]
Thos. Adamson: 1m -5, 1m 5-10, 3m 20-30; 1f 20-30 1f 60-70

I found in Platte Co MO an Abram Adamson in 1840; he was a bit young but certainly had a household of boys:
1m 5-10, 2m 10-15, 1m 15-20, 1m 20-30, 1m 40-50; 1f 5-10, 1f 40-50

1860 Census, Jasper Co Iowa, Hh 168
Abraham Adamson, age 71, b. TN. Elnora, 170, b. TN
Elisha, 26, b. IN Drusilla, 18, b. Ohio [Elisha married Priscilla [Drusilla?] Ross 20 Nov 1859]
Sons Henry, Lewis, and Ira, were all enumerated following Abraham in this census.

Received copies of estate file from Jasper Co, Iowa.
24 Oct 1863 Joseph Ashton, Joshua Dilham & Thomas Haskit were appointed to appraise the personal property of the estate of Abraham Adamson, deceased.
A copy is included: some livestock, corn & wheat, a two-horse carriage, bee stands, a box of carpenter tools. There was a list of those who owed Adamson money and included two of his sons, Lewis & Enos. Property was set aside for benefit of the widow - all household and kitchen furniture and all farming utensils, 1 cow & calf, a gray mare, five head of fat hogs, 15 pigs under 6 mo. old, 125 bushels of corn, two loads of sheaf, oats & hay in the mow, and 20 bushels of wheat, $52 to hire help, $20 for clothing, $15 for grociers.

A. T. Ault sumitted a bill for visits 7 visits from Sept 19 -25 - $16
H. E. Hunter submitted his medical bill for 6 visits from Oct 5 - Oct 11 - $18

There is a record of the sale - items and buyers but not dated. Family members who made purchases were Elisha Adamson, son-in-law Nathan Ballard, Lewis Adamson, Evan Adamson. Henry Hammer bought the carriage for $23.

In 1864, Ellen Adamson petitioned the Court in a suit to have her dower laid off. Defendants were Henry Hammer, Administrator of the estate of Abraham Adamson, Evan, John, Benjamin, Enos, Henry, Lewis, Ira, and Elisha Adamson, Elizabeth Hodson, and Rachel Ballard. The land described was 129 acres.
Those who receipt of the notice on 27 Aug 1864 were Evan Adamson, Henry (X) Adamson, Lewis (x) Adamson - attested to by Nathan S. Ballard, Elizabeth (x) Hodson, attested by Henry Adamson, Elisha Adamson, Henry Hammer as Adaministrator, Rachel (x) Ballard, attested by Nathan S. Ballard. Notice was delived on 24 Nov 1864 on Enos Adamson in Buena Vista Township, Jasper Co. There is a statment by Henry Adamson that Benjamin & Ira Adamson are not residents of the state of Iowa.
Jesse Rickman, H. K. Parker & Baxter George were appointed to lay off the dower and report to the court before 1 Jan 1865. Their report was dated 31 Dec 1864. They laid off a plot of 50 acres, the lands containing the homestead.

Many members of this family are buried in Adamson Grove Pioneer Cemetery, Jasper Co, Iowa, as are many Hammers - probably relatives of Abraham's mother.
Adamson Grove Cemetery began in the fall of 1846 when Henry Adamson died. Many of the early graves from this time on were Adamson graves. A little over two acres was deeded in 1849 for use as a cemetery. Today it is fenced, has a gate, is well maintained, but access is down a poorly maintained lane. There are approximately 140 burials in Adamson Grove Cemetery and the tombstones are in fair to good condition.
Compiled by Jasper County Genealogical Society
Note: I have not been able to identify a Henry Adamson who died in 1846 - his name is even given as Henry W. Adamson in one place, although I doubt he had a middle initial. The grave is not marked. Abraham did have a son named Henry, born 1826, who was alive and well long after 1846. Abraham had no known brother named Henry. I suspect the name may have been lost to time. Or maybe he was a Henry Hammer, instead of Adamson.
