Evan ADAMSON

(5 Jan 1808 or 1813 - 26 May 1899)

I very much suspect his birth as 1808 on his grave marker is an error. His parents married in early in 1812 and in 1850, he indicated he was born in 1813. There is a note on FindAGrave that his obit gave his birth year as 1810. Apparently he wasn't sure himself.

Said to have married Elizabeth Miller, 4 Aug 1835, Jefferson, TN.

The Newton Record, Thursday, June 1, 1899
Obituary of Evan Adamson. States he was born Jan 5 1810 and was age 89 years, four months, and 21 days when he died on Friday, May 6, 1899. [I suspect he was actually born in 1813.] He had made his home on his farm in Adamson Grove for 53 years; he and his wife came the same year that Jasper Co was organized, 1846. He was born in Jefferson Co, TN. His parents moved to Indiana when he was a boy. He married Miss Elizabeth Miller, who survived him, on 4 Aug 1835. They moved to Missouri in the fall of 1840, and to Iowa in April of 1846, settling in the grove which then took their name, a few miles southeast of Newton. They had nine children, six still living: Mrs. S. A. Richards, and Evan Jr., who live at the old home; Mrs. Clara Bushey of Chariton, Iowa; Abraham of Newton; Mrs. Libbie Ohler and Mrs. Mattie Reno of Silver Bow, Wyoming. Children Frank M., Mary Ellen and Joseph S., died many years ago.

Iowa State Democrat, Thursday, Sep 20, 1900
Mrs. Elizabeth Miller Adamson died at her home southeast of Newton, Wednesday, September 12, 1900, in her 84th year.
The maiden name of the deceased was Elizabeth Miller. She was born in North Carolina, Dec. 25, 1816. When a child she moved with her parents to Madison County, Indiana, where she grew to womanhood. She was married to Evan Adamson August 4, 1835, and for almost 64 years they trod life's path together, the husband passing away May 26, 1899. To them were born nine children, six of whom still survive, all being present at the funeral save one.
The Adamsons were among our best known people. For years and years the names of Uncle Evan and Aunt Betsy Adamson were familiar to all. They were old settlers and possessed that warmth of heart and kindly sympathy that is such a strong characteristic of all those older ones who passed through the trials and privations of frontier life. The old customs were never forgotten and at the Adamson home the "latch string" always hung within easy reach.
The funeral occurred Sunday and was held at the home. There were very many present and many tears shed testified to the high esteem in which the deceased was held. The services were conducted by Rev. W. A. Rouze, assisted by Revs. Kirkwood and Murphy. ~
