Individual Details
Laurida Pippin
(1799 - Bef 5 Sep 1831)
During March or April of 1831, several relatives had questioned Laurida if she was pregnant and she denied it. She did confess to Griffin Taylor, probably her brother-in-law, that she was. She asked Harriet, wife of her brother Elias, if she thought it would be wrong to kill the child.
On 10 Jun 1831, Robeson Co NC, there was a coroner's jury investigation into the claim that Laurida had a bastard child and had murdered that child. At least seven witnesses posseed detailed information & Laurida was committed to jail. She along with her father Solomon II and brothers Noah & Elias signed a 500# bond that she would appear before the superior court judge on Monday, Oct 3rd. Her father sold his lands he had pledged as bond for his daughter to possible relatives in South Carolina on Sept 5th.. He was by this time about 75 years of age. Laurida failed to appear in court & on 4 Oct 1831 was found guilty; the sheriff was ordered to look for the Pippins who had left the state. William Hill testified before the Robeson Co Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions in Spring 1832 that John W. Powell, Esq. had lately received a letter from Florida informing him of the death of Lauridy Pippin since she removed to that country.
