Price Nathaniel Thomas

(10 Aug 1834 - 18 Aug 1865)

There is often seen another child of Nathaniel & Rebecca as Nathaniel Thomas. He cannot be accounted for in the earlier censuses. I believe he is simply a confusion with Price, whose middle name was apparently Nathaniel.

I had difficulty finding Price Thomas after the marriage record. There is one entry in the 1860 census in Caswell Co that seems to be him.
Hh 380
T. N. Thomas, age 25, born Virginia. W. J. Thomas, age 24 [female], b. VA. Rebecca age 5, b. VA. And N. P. Thomas [male] age 3, b. N.C. I suspect the initial in both Price and Mariah's names may have been transcribed wrong by the enumerator when he recopied his data.

Deed Book ii, p.381
12 Mar 1857 Philip H. Thomas, guardian of Junius P. Thomas to Price N. Thomas of Caswell to receive from estate of Nathaniel Thomas dec'd.

There are also a number of slaves in the 1860 slave schedule, owner listed as "P.N. Thomas"

J. B. Walters made bond in the amount of $20,000, Az. G. Walters & Henry A. Powell, securities, on 2 Oct 1865, to Administer the estate of Prince N. Thomas. Signed: Joel B. Walters, A. G. Walters, H. A. Powell.
Many accounts are listed but of interest is the following:
Those receiving payments from the estate included Josiah Thomas, Veal Grocery for the the Widow's Year allowance, Gabriel Thomas, Isaac Walters, Amy Thomas, Dr. W. M. Brooks, Frank Thomas
Paid out for the year 1866, included, Frank Thomas, Robert Walters, C. T. Walters.
Note due the estate on A. W. Thomas $832.40. A. R. Denney Security for. Not any part of it paid. Went into Bankruptcy in 1868 - sold his crop of Tobacco in 1867 to James M. Walker with the understanding if was to go to pay the note and Walker went into Bankruptcy without paying any part of.
William Warren - note for $466.50, A. W. Thomas Security. Thomas gone in bankruptcy. The note credited by acount 20 Nov 1868 $281.00. Balance due doubtful - cannot be collected if he claims the homestead, also I have the proceeds of his Tobacoo crop in 1867 sold to James M. Walker and Walker never paid which would have about extinquished note.
Rent bond with the widow Maria Thomas, security of A. W. Thomas gone into bankruptcy and Mrs. Thomas if she claims the homestead could not collected. She has one child and all this is left after paying debts is theirs.
Bond on Maria J. Thomas for puchase at the sale, due in 1866. Cannot be collected but the property is all her and her sons and I thought it best not to sue.
Note on A. W. Thomas & James Walker for rent, Dr. James Smith, security for $700 for the year.
After all the debts and money that could not be collected, J. B. Walters owed the estate $141.63.
16 Aug 1869. The settlement of the estate drug on with lawsuits, etc. at least until 1873.

Price N. Thomas, b. 10 Aug 1834, d. 18 Aug 1865.
Green Hill Cemetery,
Danville, Pittsylvania Co VA

He has a CSA marker for service in the confederacy.
It is a joint marker with his daughter Rebecca.

Mariah would have been born 1840 if she's telling the truth about her age - if she's the widow of Price, she would have been only 14 at her marriage. However in 1860, she was already 24.
1870 Census. Caswell Co NC. Dan River. Hh 271
Mariah Thomas, age 30, b. VA. Nathaniel, age 12, b. NC. [likely the three year old "N.P." in 1860].
Jinnings Glass, age 26. Pattie, 24. John, 4.
Next household is that of an Obadiah Thomas, a Black family.
