Leila Mae Kirkpatrick was born 21 July 1906, Vesta, Johnson County, Nebraska. She married June 1927 to George Taylor Whitmarsh, who was born 18 August 1904 at Denmark, Lee County, Iowa, and died 15 October 1984, Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa. She is living (1984) in Creston, Union County, Iowa.

There were two (2) children born of the marriage.

Telegraph Herald, Dubuque, Iowa, April 10, 2002: Leila M. Whitmarsh, 95, of Bethany Home, formerly of Creston, Iowa, died at 6:55 a.m. Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at Bethany Home. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. April 27 at First United Church of Christ, Creston. Burial will be Thursday in Graceland Cemetery, Creston. She was born on July 21, 1906, in Vesta, Neb., daughter of Albert and Anna Kirkpatrick. She married George Whitmarsh in 1927, and moved to Creston in 1936. Leila resided at her home in Creston until her move to Bethany Home in Dubuque in 1998. Leila was a teacher for many years, beginning in a one-room school-house. She particularly enjoyed her years as a teacher in the Orient/Macksburg School District from 1952 to 1972. She was an active member of her community and church and was well loved by her family and friends. She always was very interested in what everyone in the family was doing and in her friends' lives and their families' accomplishments. She was very interested in politics and loved her city and country. She had a lifelong love for books and for learning new things.Her autobiography, written in the 1980s, makes fascinating reading. Her life spanned the 20th century, and she had a remarkable memory for the many events she witnessed and experienced. She had an indomitable spirit.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Vincent Williams, of Dubuque; a daughter-in-law, Glenna Whitmarsh, of San Antonio, Texas; four grandchildren, Jeannine (Kevin) Burgett, Dana (Robert) Meador, Jonathan (Cindy) Williams and Michael (Maryjo) Williams; and six great-grandchildren, Gordon and Daniel Burgett, Robbie and Shawn Meador, and Michaela and Allison Williams; a brother and sister-in-law, David and Winifred Kirkpatrick, of Grand Rapids, Mich.; a brother-in-law, Clayton Whitmarsh, of Denmark, Iowa; and a sister-in-law, Thelma Whitmarsh, of Mount Pleasant, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her husband, George, in 1984; and a son, Duane in 1991. Memorials may be given to First United Church of Christ, Creston, and Bethany Home, Dubuque. The family wishes to thank the staff of Bethany Home for their loving care and concern.

The Des Moines Register, Des Moines, Iowa, April 26, 2002: Leila M. Whitmarsh, 95, of Dubuque died of a heart ailment April 9 at Bethany House there. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at United Church of Christ Congregational in Creston, of which she was a member. Private family burial was held Thursday at Graceland Cemetery there. Mrs. Whitmarsh was born in Vesta, Neb., and had lived in Creston 63 years before moving to Dubuque in 1998. She was a rural schoolteacher and had taught with the Orient-Macksburg school system before retiring. She was a member of the Iowa Retired Teachers Association, the National Education Association, Mayflower Friendship and First United Church of Christ in Creston and a charter member of Creston Women's Club. She was a chairwoman with the American Cancer Society and had served on the Creston school board. She is survived by a daughter, Patricia Williams of Dubuque a brother, David Kirkpatrick of Grand Rapids, Mich. four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, George. The family will receive friends following memorial services at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to her church. Coen-Beaty-Pearson Family Funeral Service in Creston is handling arrangements.
