Duane Richard Whitmarsh

Whitmarsh was a partner in the accounting firm of Deloitte & Touche since 1972. Whitmarsh, 56, died in a hospital Wednesday of complications of a stroke. In November he underwent surgery for a brain tumor. He was a native of Keokuk, Iowa.
He had been a certified public accountant since 1959. A year earlier he joined the firm of Haskins & Sells in Denver. He was a former instructor at Trinity University and a member of Trinity Associates, and was instrumental in establishing the Deloitte Haskins & Sells Accounting Career Award in 1982 at the university.
He was active in First Presbyterian Church, serving as treasurer, elder, member of its budget and finance committee and of the steering committee for the fund-raising campaign for its new education building.
After graduating from high school in Creston, Iowa, he attended Creston Junior College and Coe College. For two years he served in the Army, and one year in the Army Reserve. Married in 1956
On Aug. 26, 1956, he and Glenna Platner were married in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Whitmarsh earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Colorado in 1958 and went to work for the Denver accounting firm.
In 1965 he was transferred to the Houston office. In 1976 he was transferred to San Antonio and became the partner-in-charge. He remained in San Antonio until his transfer to the national office in New York City in 1986. In April, Whitmarsh returned to San Antonio. He was a member of the Rotary Club.
"He was very involved in San Antonio, and his love for this city was a highlight of his life," his wife said. "After we first came here in 1976, we bought property and considered ourselves Texans ever afterward.
"His lifetime activities were directed toward improving his community; this included Broomfield, Colorado, where he was city treasurer.
"My husband had been scheduled for discharge from the hospital in a few days when he had the stroke. He wanted to return to a normal life and was planning to move into our home in Castle Hills."
Whitmarsh was active in various professional associations, including American Institute of CPAs, Texas Society of CPAs and San Antonio Chapter of CPAs.
Additional survivors include two daughters, Jeannine Burgett of Annandale, Va., and Dana Lynne Meador of Dallas; his mother, Leila M. Whitmarsh of Creston, Iowa; a sister, Patricia W. Williams of Dubuque, Iowa; and four grandsons.
Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Monday in First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Louis Zbinden officiating. Porter Loring Mortuary is in charge of cremation arrangements. The family will scatter the ashes at Rocky Mountain National Park, Colo.
