Savannah Morning News, Savannah, Georgia, Wednesday, December 20, 2000: Allenhurst---- David Lee Carter Jr., 78, died Dec. 18 at home. The Chester County, S.C., native lived in Hinesville since 1944. He was a 10-year Army veteran who attained the rank of sergeant. He served in Panama during World War II. He also served as a military police at Fort Stewart. After retiring from the military, he worked as a law enforcement official with the city of Hinesville and then the Liberty County Sheriff's Department. He retired after 20 years in law enforcement. He then owned and operated Carter's Truck Stop and Carter's Trucking Co. in Midway. He was a member of Gum Branch Baptist Church, a Shriner with the Alee Temple and a member of the Scottish Rite and Masonic Lodge No. 271. SURVIVORS: his wife, Barbara Carter of Allenhurst; sons, Loyal Carter of Louisburg, N.C., Rodney Carter of Gum Branch, Thomas Carter of Hinesville and David L. Carter III of Elberton; daughters, Darlene Ehrensperger of Coppell, Texas and Roxanne Austin of Seattle; a brother, Lex Carter of Rock Hill, S.C.; sisters, Helen Yarborough and Minnie Lee, both of Chester, S.C., and Lunnette McCaskin [McCaston] of Rock Hill; 11 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. VISITATION: begins at 6 p.m. today at Thomas L. Carter Funeral Home, Hinesville. FUNERAL: 2 p.m. Thursday at Gum Branch Baptist Church, burial in Hinesville Cemetery with Masonic Rites.
