ROBERT J. C. CARTER

(14 Nov 1862 - 8 Apr 1929)

Robert came to Portland, Maine as a young man and drove a horse drawn trolley from uptown Portland to Union Station. Annie (which was what she always went by) was the only daughter of Simon Day and Sarah Jane Moore. Sarah died when Annie was very little. Annie came to Portland, Maine in 1889 when she was about 18 years of age. She worked for George W. True the Mayor of Portland doing housework. Robert met Annie and they fell in love. On April 06, 1892 they were married over the Dudley & Weed Drugstore, on the corner of Pine and Brackett Streets in Mrs. Thompson's apartment who was a friend of Annie's. Mrs. Thompson was also from Prince Edward Island.

Robert and Annie moved back to his home village of Kouchibouguac, New Brunswick. They lived with his parents Robert and Elsie Carter until the fall of 1895, when they moved into the William Bell farm that they had bought and raised their family. In the fall of 1924 Robert went to Bethel, Maine and worked in the woods for Wade Thurston. Wades wife Bertha was a half sister to Annie. Leslie, Bruce and Firth Carter were there working already. Robert returned home in the spring of 1925 to put his crops in.

On April 08, 1929 grandfather Robert died, he was 67 years old. Then in the spring of 1930 the farm caught fire and burned to the ground and everything was lost. Firth had bought the Grogan farm and gave Annie the lumber from the existing buildings of the farm to rebuild. Then on July 06, 1932 Robert and Annie's oldest daughter Hattie died and left behind six children.

On October 04, 1932 Isabel Carter and Cleveland Ryder were married at Annie's home that was rebuilt after the fire. In August of 1935 there was a large forest fire that swept through the area, at one point everyone thought that the village of Kouchibouguac was going to be lost. Annie had many hardships over the years, but overcame them all. She spent the winter of 1963 & 1964 with her son Leslie and daughter Isabel in the Portland area. In April of 1964 Cleveland and Isabel brought Annie by the South Portland fire station to say goodbye to me (Dana C. Ryder). They were headed to Knowlesville, New Brunswick so Annie could visit with her son Bruce before returning to Kouchibouguac. While there she took a gall-bladder attack and died in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. Annie died at 91 years of age. [Dana C. Ryder]
