Individual Details

In June of 1831 the family moved to Kouchibouguac, New Brunswick, Canada. It is said that Robert was nine months old when they came to Canada. He grew up on what is known as Carter Hill in Kouchibouguac. On April 20, 1853 when Robert was 22 years old he received a grant of land of 100 acres on Tweedie Brook Road. He spent 2 years clearing and building a home. On December 27, 1855 Robert married Elsie Caie MacDonald. Robert's mother Mariam didn't get a chance to see the wedding since she passed on June 18th of the same year. Not much has been passed down on the couple. Robert worked in the woods and farmed his land. One year working in the woods, he got a branch stuck in his eye. As a result of the injury, he lost the sight in that eye and wore a patch over it.

My mother E. Isabel (Carter) Ryder remembers as a little girl, walking up with her mother Margaret Annie (Day) Carter and sister Ella (Carter) Irvine to visit her grandparents (about 2 miles to the old homestead). Elsie always had a full apron on with a big pocket full of candy to give to the girls.
