MELANCKTHUN WOOLSEY THORNE

(25 Sep 1805 - 3 Nov 1882)

Melanckthun Woolsey Thorne was a blacksmith, shoemaker and farmer. He was the eldest son of Richard and Phebe (Dunham) Thorne and the eldest grandchild of Melancthon and Hannah Thorne. He was born in the New Canaan wilderness where his parents received a land grant after his birth. By the 1820s when Melancthon W. Thorne married Mehetable Ann Perry, the eldest daughter of Wesley and Mary (Humphrey) Perry, the pattern of settlement had spread from the New Canaan meadows into the neighbouring region of Butternut Ridge in King's County. Melanckthun petitioned and received a number of grantsof land in the area as did several of his brothers. He built a modest Cape Cod house on the road between New Canaan and the village of Butternut Ridge. The farm passed to his second youngest son Jacob, then to Roy Thorne and now, in 2007, belongs to his great grandson, Stuart Thorne. Melanckthun kept a blacksmith shop in a small building near the road. He was a deacon in the Butternut Ridge Baptist Church and generally led a quiet and but worthy life. His copperplate handwriting is preserved in the family bible and in the account books for his business. (These books are currently in the possession of Clinton Thorne, the son of Roy Thorne) When Melancthon died on the 3rd of November 1882, he was buried in the family plot in the New Canaan Baptist Cemetery. His wife, Annie, died the following year. [Thorne Book]
