ABRAHAM H. THORNE
(4 Nov 1833 - 26 Feb 1899)
Abraham (Abram) Thorne was a blacksmith and lived on the Canaan Road, in Mannhurst near his brothers Charles and Isaac and in Thornetown, Johnston Parish, Queen's Co where both of his wives were born. Mrs. Arthur Gillies (Blanche) the daughter of Gilbert Thorne and granddaughter of Abram and his wife Ruth (Thorne) Thorne maintained that Abram's first wife was a Perry. However, the Queen's County Marriage Register stated that she was Elizabeth Thorne. (ref QCMR 11 Oct., 1854). Given the number of land transfers between George Thorne and his wife, Catherine Patterson and their children, it is most likely that Elizabeth was their daughter. Mary Elizabeth Thorne, the first wife of Abraham Thorne, son of Melancthon and Mehetable Ann (Perry) Thorne, was not identified as a child of George and Catherine (Patterson) Thorne when Alfreda (Noddin) Patterson listed the first four generations of Melancthon and Hannah (Butler) Thorne descendants. When George and Catherine are selling property on the Washademoak Lake, their sales involve Abraham Thorne and his wife Elizabeth, Thomas Hetherington and his wife Violet D. and Michael B. Perry and his wife Hannah. All three would appear to be sisters. A. P. Hetherington remembers Miriam "Mame" Thorne arriving at their home when he was a youngster. He knew she was a cousin to his grandfather somehow, but he didn't know the connection.
The source for Abraham's middle initial was the obituary of his son David in the Sunday Telegram, Portland, Me. Jan 22, 1956.
LAND TRANSFERS: See Queen's County Registry Office Book L #3012 p.241 Melancthon Thorne Sr conveys land to his son George (Lot 5) Book U #6945 p.247. George Thorne and Catherine his wife convey 75 acres NE part of Lot 5 to Abraham Thorne for 150 pounds; 6 Sep 1858 Book V #7306 p.137 Abraham Thorne and Elizabeth his wife sell to James Thorne for 150 pounds 75 acres NE part of lot #5; Book V p.168 25 Feb 1860 George Thorne and Catherine his wife convey 50 acres adjoining that of Abraham Thorne's to Violet Thorne; Book V #7333 p.169 2 Mar 1860 George Thorne and Catherine his wife sell to Abraham Thorne for 150 pounds 75 acres being part of lots 4 and 5 being bounded on the north east by the remainder of lot 5 owned and occupied by George Thorne and his wife Catherine. Book V #7334 p.170 2 Mar 1860 George Thorne and Catherine his wife for 200 pounds convey to Abraham Thorne and Thomas Hetherington Lot 5; Book V #7404 p259 31 May 1860 Abraham Thorne and Elizabeth his wife and Thomas Hetherington and Violet his wife sell to George Thorne for 100 pounds part of lot 5; Book Z #8960 p.126 [??date] Abraham Thorne sells 75 acres in lots 4 and 5 to Charles William Thorne.
The preceding land transfers establish a connection between George and Catherine (Patterson) Thorne and Abraham and Elizabeth (Thorne) Thorne; Thomas and Violet (Thorne) Hetherington and James and his wife Mehetable (Thorne) Thorne. Abraham and Mehetable were brother and sister. James and Violet have been established as brother and sister in Alfreda Patterson's genealogies of the "Thorne" family. This sequence of land transfers would make it apparent that Mary Elizabeth Thorne was the sister of Violet and James and that she died prior to his marriage to Ruth Thorne, the daughter of Jacob and Mary Elizabeth (Worden) Thorne on 4th December 1870.
