(Aug 6, 1793 - DECEASED)

BIOGRAPHY: Susannah Schindler was born August 6, 1793 in Frederick, Fr ederick C ounty, Maryland to Adam and Christina (Quierin) Schindler. S he was baptized o n August 25, 1793. On November 5, 1813, she marrie d to John Link. John Li nk was born in Augusta County, Virginia, J uly 3, 1790, and lived out his life i n the neighborhood of his birth . His descendants are many, and those living in Augusta County now mak e up what is probably the largest single family in that p art of Virgi nia. Three of John's sons, Adam, John and David, moved to Ohio when t hey were young men. John and David later moved from Ohio to Illinois . A fourt h son, Daniel William, remained in Augusta County, as did th e four daughters, E lizabeth, Catherine, Susan Christiana and Esther M argaret. On November 5, 1813 , John married Susannah Schindler, daugh ter of Adam Schindler. Her father signe d the marriage bond. About fiv e years later a younger brother of John, named Wi lliam, married Susan nah's younger sister, Esther Charlotte. The two families of brother s and sisters were apparently very close, evidenced in several ways i n various legal documents, wills and deeds, where these served one ano ther as wit nesses, sureties and the like. John's and Susannah's daugh ter, Susan Christiana , and William's and Esther Charlotte's daughter , Rebecca, married brothers, Wil liam A. and Peter Houff, respectively . When John's estate was settled, Emanuel Beam, son-in-law of Willia m and Esther Charlotte, was one of the appraisers. It was with her au nt, Mary Ann Link, who later married Emmanuel Beam, that Ida El izabet h Stover, who was to become the mother of the Eisenhowers, went to Kan sas . John and Susannah had their children baptized at Salem Church , near their fa rm. In order of birth, these children were: Adam Schin dler Link, born August 13 , 1814; Elizabeth Link, born December 24, 18 17; Catherine Link, born December 2 3, 1819; Daniel William Link, bor n August 27, 1822; Susan Christiana Rebecca Li nk, born February 5, 18 25; John Link, Jr., born May 8, 1828; David Schindler Li nk, born Jun e 5, 1832; and Esther Margaret Link, whose birth date could not be fou nd. All were born and reared on John's farm near Fort Defiance. All we re mem bers of Salem Lutheran Church. Elizabeth and Susan Christiana w ere confirmed to gether December 8, 1840. Adam Schindler Link, the el dest, became an ordained L utheran minister. He married Elizabeth Reim ensnyder in Chillicothe, Ohio, where he had gone to preach. He was pr obably the first of John's sons to go west fro m their Shenandoah Vall ey home, and the opportunities Adam saw in Ohio and wrot e back home a bout influenced his brothers, John and David, to seek their fortun e s in the West. Adam and Elizabeth had eight children. The youngest, Mr s. Flore nce Link Stone-burger, is alive at this writing. She is eight y-nine years old. She told me the story she had heard from her fathe r of Peter Link, her father's uncle and my great-great-grandfather, a nd his family coming from Virginia to I llinois in 1835-36 and stoppin g a whole week in the household of Adam, the youn g and poor pastor. T he visit precipitated a near economic tragedy although Pete r and hi s large family of growing youngsters were made welcome. Little is to b e learned about the other seven, except John Henry Link, the oldest . He became a prominent Lutheran pastor. His son and grandson were Lu theran ministers. John 's eldest daughter, Elizabeth, married Willia m M. Root. Their family of eight c hildren included six sons and two d aughters. The two daughters, Emily and Eliza beth, both married Hulvey s. The eight children were Martin Van Buren, Emily S., Junius Frankli n, John Abraham, William D., Eugene Miles, Elizabeth E. and Henr y Geo rge. If we are to judge by their children's names, the Roots were inte rest ed in politics, the classics and economics and particularly admir ed certain ind ividual advocates in each of these subjects. Martin Va n Buren Root lost his lif e on the battlefield during the Civil War an d his
