Henry Culp

(25 Feb 1762 - 16 Aug 1844)

Henry is believed to have followed his brothers (and possibly his father) to Rockingham County, Virginia, from Pennsylvania. He is thought to be living in Virginia beginning around 1785 until the early 1800s. Henry and his brother John were listed in the Rockingham County Minutes Book (part 2, 1786 - 1788, page 682) on 22 Jan 1787 along with David Branaman as indebted to the Govenor of Virginia (10 lbs.) He is listed in the 1788 tax roll with three horses, two in 1792, two in 1793, three in 1798, four in 1800, and five in 1801. Henry and his brother Michael witnessed a Showalter - Roth marriage in 1791, and Henry witnessed his son's, Henry and Frances Funk's marriage conscent form on 22 March 1798. He deeded Rockingham County land to John Herdman in February of 1799, and to a Trout in December 1802. He then moved on and became an early pioneer of Fairfield County, Ohio where he first purchased land in 1804. He and Dorotha were residents of Pleasant Township until their deaths. They are both buried in Pleasant Hill Mennonite Cemetery, now the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery Row H - #32 (tombstone photograph available).

Notes from "History of the Kolb, Kulp, and Culp Families", by Daniel Cassell, 1894.

page 553: "Henry Culp came to Ohio from Virginia, Rockingham County. Henry Culp had six sons and some daughters, Christian, Henry, Jacob, John, and David. The descendants of the brothers removed to northwest and western Ohio, Illinois, and from there have scattered over the west".

page 557: A letter written in 1895 by Mrs. Sherman Culp of Plymouth, OH, states: "His (Christian Culp's) father's name was Henry Culp, and the names of his brother and sisters were Jacob, David, Benona, Mary, Sallie and Hannah. I understood it (the Culp Family Bible) was in Findlay, Ohio, with some of the Culps there". Note: This must be in reference to the descendants of Henry's son Benoni (Christian's brother) who lived in and around Findlay.

Ed Brumbach, in his history of the Brumbach family of Fairfield County, Ohio, gives the children as Jacob (1786 - 1831), Mary (1787 - 1857), Christian (1790 - 1849), Sarah (1793 - 1845), and possibly Hannah, David, Benoni, Henry, and Sallie.
