Johann Phillip Kolb
(8 Sep 1734 - Abt 1839)
Evidence is building that Johann Phillip Kolb is the father of Michael, John, and Henry, and there are several researchers diligently putting pieces of this same puzzle together. I tend to believe that Phillip, as he preferred to be called, stayed in Pennsylvania with other children. There is no evidence of him in Rockingham Co., VA. His three known sons first appeared on the Rockingham Co., VA Census (Personal Property Tax List) in 1787. Michael and Henry were assigned to Militia Company 15, and John was assigned to Militia Company 17. This is three years before the Funks arrived in Rockingham County. Listed below is some of the information that has been gathered thus far:
FROM RESEARCHER BARBARA KROL:
A Johann Philipp Kolb arrived in Philadelphia on the ship "Neptune" from Rotterdam and took the oath and affirmance to the government (British) on Monday, September 30, 1754. The ship's Captain Waire listed Johann from Wurttemberger, Germany.
Two years previously, Anton Roth (Rhodes) arrived on the same ship and took the oath on October 4, 1752. His daughter, Magdalena Rhodes married Michael Kolb/Culp (Johann's son) in Pennsylvania before 1784. Anton was known to have been from Wurttemberger, Germany.
Dorothy Beede Berry of Columbiana, Ohio wrote: Philipp Kolb of Rockingham Co., VA was the father of Michael Kolb/Culp (1753-1828). Note: Other sources have Michael born in 1755 in York Co., Pennsylvania.
In a hand written note from Fred Daniel Culp: "Michael's father - Philip d. 105 yrs."
FROM RESEARCHER DAVE CULP:
From Notes on Michael Culp as told by William C. Moyer: There was a John Culp in Fairfield Co., OH, that looked very much like our Michael's brother, John.
