Individual Details

Jeremiah "Jerry" Roberson Alexander

(6 Jan 1845 - 12 Jun 1927)

While Jerry was still quite young, the family moved to Morgan County, Alabama, where the family lived until he was twelve years old (1857). Leaving Alabama in 1857 the family made a brief sojourn in Providence Community, near Spring Ridge, Louisiana. The family moved to Panola County, Texas in January 1860. The 1860 Texas Census for Panola County placed the family in "Grand Bluffs". They settled in Shady Grove, a community between Carthage and DeBerry. They quickly became associated with the old Belle Fountain Baptist Church, several miles east of Shady Grove. Jerry and two of his brothers, Jason Benton and John Johnson, saw service during the Civil War. Jerry served a total of twenty months near the end of the war. All three served with Company B, 14th Texas Infantry, CSA. Jerry engaged the enemy in the Battle of Red River near Mansfield, Louisiana. Jerry surrendered to the Lord's call to preach, and the Belle Fountain Baptist Church licensed him in June 1877. He became a fully ordained minister in April, 1878. He pastored numerous churches in the area including Shady Grove, Landmark (Deadwood), Mission Grove (Furrh), Centennial, New Prospect, and Salem (Deadwood), all of which were "across the River", in eastern Panola County. He was well respected by his brethren pastors and held several positions in the Mount Zion Baptist Association. He preached his last sermon while blind and sitting in a straight-backed chair. The subject of his sermon was Romans 12.

Jerry and Fannie are buried together in Deadwood Methodist Church Cemetery (tombstone photograph available).
