Obituary
The death of John W. McCarthy, formerly of Bangor, occurred in Washington, D. C. aSturday [sic] morning, at the age of 45 years. He left Bangor with his family a year ago and had lived in Washington since then. He was employed here for some time in the Mitchell & thissell shoe store, later opening a grocery store on State street. For many years he was in the fire department attached to Hose 5. He was a member of Pine Cone Council, Knights of Columbus, and of the Modern Woodmen. News of his passing will be learned with regret by a wide circle, who knew him for his fine character and kind and genial disposition. He is survived by his wife, Ida; two sons, William and John, who were with him at the time of his death; two sisters, Mrs. Lavoy of Somerville, Mass., and Mrs. Charles Peterson of Green Lake, and by one brother, Cornelius, of Old Town. The remains will arrive this morning and will be taken to the the home of Fred H. Lowell, a near friend, at 229 State street. The time of the funeral will be announced.Newspaper Article

Funeral services for John W. McCarthy were held Tuesday morning in St. John's Catholic church. Rev. T. J. Nelligan, P. R., officiated. The bearers were Cornelius J. Russell, James Sullivan, John Shannon, Patrick Cushing and John Manard, Michael J. Glynn. There were many friends present and beautiful floral tributes. Interment was in Mt. Pleasant cemetery.Endnotes
