Residence
John was still in Ashe County as late as 1865 when he and his sons were mentioned in the county court orders: Ordered by the court that Geo. Blevins be appointed overseer of the road from the Widow Howell's to the top of Winda Ridge with the following hands, viz, Alfred Barker, Joab Sullen, Leander Hurley, Harvey Hurley, John Senter, William Senter, Jesse Senter, Geo. Pope, Jasper Hurley & Alfred Blevins.Military
John enlisted September 1, 1861 in Co. K, 37th NC Infantry. He was take POW at New Bern, North Carolina on March 14, 1862. He was confined at Fort Columbus, New York harbor until transfered to Aiken's Landing, Virginia on August 5, 1862 in an exchange. He was discharged for disability when exchanged. He later enlisted in the 97th NC Militia. On November 20, 1864 he received a medical examination and was diagnosed as suffering from chronic diarrhea.Endnotes
