Military
Joseph enlisted May 17, 1861 in Co. A, 26th NC Infantry. He was taken POW at New Bern, North Carolina on March 14, 1862 and confined at Fort Columbus, New York harbor until transferred to Aiken's Landing, Virginia on August 5, 1862 for exchange. He returned to duty prior to September 1, 1862. He was AWOL from November 1862 until June 1863. He returned to duty and was killed in action at Bristoe Station, Virginia on October 14, 1863.Endnotes
