James served in Co. B, 4th VSL and in Co. I2, 21st Virgina Cavalry. He may have later served in Co. D, 1st NC Junior Reserves, enlisted there on May 1, 1864 in Ashe County, North Carolina and was present until his hospitalization at Goldsboro, North Carolina on February 15, 1865 with measles.Endnotes
