Time Line of the Life of Dr. Samuel Worden
29 Oct 1668: Plymouth Colony; two men broke into Samuel's house in his absence and "attempting the chastity of his wife and sister, by many lascivious carriages, and affrightting of his children." The men were fined.
01 Jul 1672: Was proposed for freeman.
1676: Yarmouth, Mass; Was assessed war tax -£5 1s. 6d.
1679: Yarmouth, MA; With John Burgess and others "ere chosen and agreed with".... "to lock out, cut up and secure to the town such whales and whale bone as by God's providence" were cast up between Sawtuckett & Sawsuett harbor marsh. They were paid up to 5 pounds of "blubber or oyle" per whale.
21 Mar 1680: Yarmouth, Plymouth Colony; With his mother, Mary, attested to the truth of an inventory of his father's estate.
06 Jun 1682: Yarmouth, Plymouth Colony; Along with several others "proposed to take vp their Freedom, if approved". That is they were petitioning the court for permission to leave their present towns and move elsewhere.
24 Aug 1689: Yarmouth, Plymouth Colony; Inventoried an estate. Last evidence of him in Massachusetts.
08 Jul 1695: Rhode Island; Bought land in the Pettiquamscut from Benedict and James Arnold. Boundaries of this 250 acres were: on the South-by the lands of Joseph Hull, on the West - by a great pond, on the North - by lands laid out to Mr. Jahiell Brenton, on the East- by lands undisposed of at present. This is thought to be his first land purchase in Rhode Island. Yet in a deed registered 19 Sep 1693 Werden's Pond is called by his name. The date for the 250 acres is from a typed copy and may be an error or the sale may have been at an earlier date and the recording of the sale was later.
Dec 1696: Active in organizing Kingstowne, Rhode Island. Dr. Sam and his son Samuel were named in the first list of freeman in Kingstown.
12 Feb 1697: Yarmouth, Plymouth Colony; He sold the farm in Yarmouth which he had inherited to Isaac Chapman with the exception of one-half acre set aside for the Worden Cemetery. This rare original deed was found in a desk by Whitfield Johnson on the original Worden property he had inherited. Mr. Johnson deposited it for safe keeping in the Masonic Museum of National Heritage. When the Worden Family Association had it's first meeting in September of 1884, Mr. Johnson retrieved the deed for viewing at a reception in his home.
28 Jul 1697: Kingston, Washington, Rhode Island; Dr. Sam bought land from Joseph Hull bordering the land he had from the Arnolds.
20 Feb 1700: Kingstown, Washington, Rhode Island; Sold 200 acres of Pettaquamscutt purchase land.
aft 1702: Kingston, Washington, Rhode Island; Sold 50 acres to Joseph Hull.
27 Jun 1702: Kingston, Washington, Rhode Island; Gave his son, Isaac part of his farm.
05 Apr 1708: Isaac WORDEN (1670-1718); Kingstown, Washington, Rhode Island; sold land and house south of Mink Brook, part of the original land bought from the Arnolds.
09 Feb 1709: Stonington, New London, Connecticut; Gave 30 acres to his son, Nathaniel.
12 May 1709: Stonington, New London, Connecticut; Bought one 50 acre and one 100 acre tract of land.
05 Aug 1714: Stonington, New London, Connecticut; He gave the balance of the 50 acre piece to his son Thomas.
bef 1715: Moved to Stonington, Connecticut before 1715.
08 Dec 1715: Great Neck, Kingstown, Washington, Rhode Island; Gave his son, Samuel 100 acre.
12 Aug 1716: Stonington, New London, Connecticut; Gave Isaac "...the reversion of all my farms of land which I now live upon in Stonington with ye dwelling house.."
26 Aug 1716: Died in Stonington, New London, Connecticut. and buried in Wequetequoc Cemetery, Stonington, New London, Connecticut.
18 Sep 1716: Stonington, New London, Connecticut; Frances widow of Samuel refused administration of estate and desired it be granted to Isaac. Isaac died 1718 and his widow Rebekah accepted trust.
Samuel's Deed providing for a cemetery for Worden Descendants
To all people to whom these present shall come - Samuel Werden, of Kingstown, in the Government of Rhode Island and Providence plantations in New England, sendeth Greeting: Know ye that I, the said Samuel Werden, for and in consideration of the full sum of two hundred and fifty pounds, lawful money of New England, to me in hand paid before the sealing and delivery of these presents, well and truly paid by Isaac Chapman of Bristol, in the Government of the Massachusetts bay in New England, blacksmith, the receipt thereof and of every part and parcel I do acknowledge myself therewith to be fully satisfied, contented and paid, and thereof and of every part and parcel thereof I do, for me and my heirs, executors, administrators and assigns exonerit, acquit and discharge him the said Isaac Chapman, his heirs, executor, administrators and assigns and every of them by these presents for ever, have fully, freely, clearly and absolutely given, granted, bargained, sold, enfoeffed and confirmed, and by these presents do give, grant, bargain, enfoeff and confirm unto him the said Isaac Chapman, his heirs, executors, administrators and assigns forever, all that my farm situate, lying and being in Susuet, in the township of Yarmouth, in the Government of the Massachusetts Bay in New England, the which is bounded as followeth: Southwardly by the Commons, Northerly by the land of Silas Sears, Westerly by the westernmost (corner) of the brick Kills so called and so north to the creek and south to the head of the Lots, Easterly by the land of Paul Sears, the marsh running more easterly till it cometh near a bridge or causeway, and bounded as the fence now standeth about the marsh, with all housing, orcharding, enclosure, and all my right in Susuet Neck , with the profits, privileges and appurtenances thereunto belonging or any way appertaining, to all and singular the bargained premises, except one half aker of land which I the said Samuel Werden except and reserve to myself and to my father's posterity forever, for a burying place in my father's posterity forever, lying square about the place where my father Werden was buried, out of the aforementioned farm, notwithstanding whatever is above said to the contrary, with free liberty of ingress and egress with horse or cart or foot from the common highway to the same, to have and to hold all the residue of said farm, both upland and meadows, to him the said Isaac Chapman, his heirs and assigns, an to their only proper use and behoof forever; and I the said Samuel Werden, do for me, my executors, administrators, and assigns, covenant and guarantee to and with him the said Isaac Chapman, his heirs and assigns, that at the time of the ensealing and delivery of these presents I have full power, just right and lawful authority to give, grant, and confirm in manner and form aforesaid according to the true intent and meaning of these presents, and that all the said bargained premises are and at all times hereafter shall continue to be free and clear of and from all former gifts, grants, bargains, sales, titles and incumbrances whatsoever had, made, committed or done or to be had, made committed or done by me the said Samuel Werden, my heirs or assigns or from any other person or persons lawfully claiming of, from, by or under me, them or any of them, or by my or their means, consent or procurement. In witness whereof, I the said Samuel Werden have hereunto set my hand and seal this twelfth day of February, one thousand six hundred ninety-six-seven.
The above said Samuel Werden and Hopestill Werden his wife did both of them personally appear the date aforesaid and acknowledged these presents to be their act and deed.
