Joseph was mentioned in the 1705 will of his father. His wife Patience was mentioned in the will of her father Capt. Jonathan Sparrow of Eastham, dated 10 March 1706. Joseph Pain was one of the eight founders of the Brewster Church 16 October 1700. Patience Paine was admitted a member of the church 22 June 1701. Joseph served as selectman and town clerk of Harwich.

An inventory of the intestate estate of Ensign Joseph Paine of Harwich was taken 16 November 1712, and widow Patience was named administratrix 27 January 1712. On 14 April 1718 the estate was divided to widow Patience, eldest son Ebenezer, sons Joseph, Richard, Thomas, and John; daughters Hanah Russel (wife of Philip), Dorcas Paine, Pheby Paine, Reliance Paine, and Experience Paine.

The will of John Jenkins of Barnstable, dated 15 December 1730 and proved 3 August 1736, mentioned, among others, wife Patience and "daughter-in-law" Experience Pain.
