Obituary of Melbourne Wayne McCarter

Melbourne W. McCarter, 57, of 127 summit St. Rockford, Illinois died Friday July 18, 1969 in Las Vegas, Nevada of a heart attack. Born March 26, 1912, in Louisburg, Kansas, the son of Victor and Ethel McCarter. He lived 18 years in Rockford, Ill. having moved there from Evansville, Ind. He married the former lone Diedrick in Curry, Minn. on Dec. 26, 1939. He was a Veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. Previous to that he served in the U.S. Navy. He was employed as a salesman and then manager for 35 years for Toledo Scale Company. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church and Pavia Bridge Club, Knights of Columbus, was active in Soapbox Derby and Red Barn Country Club in Rockford. He graduated from Louisburg, Kansas High School.

Survivors include his wife, Ione, two sons Wayne M. and Greg V. all of Rockford, one sister Opal Wise of Louisburg, Kansas, two brothers, Charles of Evansville, Ind. and William of Commerce City, Colo. Services at 8:30 A.M. Tuesday in Sunberg Funeral Home and at 9 A.M. in Saint James Catholic Church, Rev. Norbert M. Richter officiating. Burial in Calvary Cemetery.

Note: Melbourne was a salesman for Toledo Scale Company for 25 years. He wrote numerous works on the History of the Old West including Characters of the Missouri Border, two Civil War novels and many magazine articles on western heroes.
